alternatives for teacher recs.

i wanted to know what the deal was with uses not teachers for recommendations. i have a coach that i would like to use that i have worked with for a long time and that knows me very well. can this recommendation substitute for a teacher recommendation or should i just add it as a third recommendation? and if so then should my coach fill out the regular teacher recommendation form or just write a couple of paragraphs about me or something? and is a recommendation from a coach given less weight than one from a teacher?

thanks

hey college doesnt suck, collegerules should be ur new user name

Yes the rec from the coach will get less weigh because they are evaluating you on 2 separate things. The coach is evaluating you as an athlete and the teacher is evaluating you as an academic. If you needed a supplemental rec, then use the coaches letter but the majority of schools would like to see teacher recs one from English/hunmanites type subject and the other from math/sciences subject.

Which teachers should I get to write my recs? I know my 10th grade chem teacher will write a fabulous rec, and my AP chem teacher this year (11th grade) told me that he'd write an excellent one too, but I'm afraid that getting recs from the same subject would not be the best thing to do. Also, I have heard that it is best getting recs from 11th grade teachers (and maybe 12th grade teachers too). Help!!

You definitely want a teacher, not a coach. A coach can't remark on your academic performance or capabilities.

Adding a third recommendation is frowned upon by most admissions committees because it gives them more to read that they didn't ask for. Check the school's policy to see if it's worth it.
