I would love to apply to Brown, but not too sure if I am independent minded enough for an open curriculum. Are there any more structured alternatives for a course of study?

Well, there is a major which has a structure and will be at least a quarter of your courework. Otherwise, you can create a structure of your own so far as I know there are no other more structured options.

You can always look up general course requirements for other schools and use that as your curriculum for Brown, should you choose to attend.

Or, as my advisor suggested, you could focus your study on a question or set of questions that interests you, such as, "What makes people tick?" or "how can we create world peace?" or "how does the physical universe fit together?" or "where does culture come from?" or something along those lines. Then take an interdisciplinary approach to finding out everything you can about that question -- see how different areas of study approach the question, and what different solutions or answers or new sets of questions they have to offer.

daaaayyummmm, that's some good advice

I highly recommend Maud Mandel (History/Judaic Studies) as a professor and an advisor.

I'm wondering what appeals to you about Brown if you don't want the open curriculum. In general, that's what appeals to the people who choose to go. You may want to rethink this. If you need structure, this is not it.

yeah, i got to be honest, if you dont like an open curriculum, Brown doesnt really have much to offer compared to other equal caliber schools.

I would disagree, iwannabe_Brown. Brown has a lot to offer -- an amazing student body, great atmosphere, good location, some top-notch departments, lots of unique opportunities related to the open curriculum (independent studies, self-created concentrations, etc), fabulous faculty, etc.

self created concentration! I would like to hear more about that...

the credited response is "go somewhere else"

HTH

titcr, amor.

Argh, enough of the titcr and HTH nonsense. This isn't the jolt.

And yes, the open curriculum is the primary draw to Brown for a lot of people, and yes, people who don't like the open curriculum might have trouble understanding and appreciating a lot of what makes Brown a great school... but that doesn't mean they shouldn't at least be welcomed to find out more about the school and the options it offers before being told they're "not wanted."

I'm crazy about interdisciplinary this-and-that which is why Brown has such strong appeal to me.

If you don't feel you are "independent-minded" enough to develop your own curriculum, you might just be fooling yourself. Plenty of other universities, even when they have somewhat strict requirements, still give you tremendous choice. So you'd be facing a lot of the same difficulty choosing anywhere you go, right? You probably wouldn't have all that much of an outline, either, many places.

God, I hate titcr.

Whatever happened to the tradition +1?

Or just plain "I agree" / "that's true" / "the real answer is"...?

Or really not posting at all if you have nothing to add...

I haven't seen, after a long intro to a "what are my chances?" thread, 'tl;dr,' so I'm giving CC a few points for [relative] effort so far.

What is titcr and HTH?
