Anybody accepted started to prepare?
The one thing thats got me nervous is the altitude/lack of oxygen, as Im from Delaware which is right about sea level across the entire state.
Anyone have any experiences/trouble with aclimating? any tips?
Im trying to not gas during first BCT because I cant handle the height.

I'm from Phoenix (~1000 ft) and didn't think it was bad during Summer Seminar (of course it will be harder in Beast). I'm just going to do a lot of running and train with our cross country team. If you're in good cardio shape, you don't have anything to worry about...because they'll still find a way to break you.;)

I'v been on a few hockey trips to Colorado and I didn't really notice the altitude at all. I'm 3 weeks into the workout that is in the appointee booklet. Is anybody else doing it?

I agree with AZcadet; when I went out there for Summer Seminar, the difference in altitude was noticeable during intramurals and PT, but it didn't really kill me. I think as long as you develop your lungs through the distance running workouts the appointee kit provides and also prepare to be in "PFT shape" then you'll be OK. You'll never really get used to walking up a flight of stairs, though.

And azhockey, I've done the circuit workout in the appointee kit a few times, but I don't have access to the weight stuff so I can't try any of that. The running preparation I do anyway with my cross country and track teams throughout the year, but I supplement that with my own daily regimen of your typical fare of pullups, pushups, situps, flutter kicks, etc. So to answer your question in short: yes, I am doing it, too!

thanks guys, Im starting the program as well, I guess im just looking for something to be nervous about lol. Cant Wait for I-Day, the academy has been my dream for a long time.

hmm, i'm from MS (~410 ft) and it seemed to bother me a bit when i was there in november. walking up the countless stairs and around the cadet area got me winded, and i thought i was in pretty darn good shape w/ running and all. as for workouts, i'm doin my own daily regimen of pushups, situps, running, etc along w/ track practice.

running is the best way

Coming from Houston I had a horrible time acclimating! My first 1.5 mile run on the 2nd day I did in a HORRID 13:30. By the end of BCT it was at 10:26. Just takes getting used to!

Yeah, the first couple weeks are annoying, if you are from near sea level. My 1.5mi time has dropped about a minute since comming here, and I don't run that distance very often.

Has finding time to exercise been tough with all the classes? i would like to do lifting and running but don't want to be too swamped?

I am from Oregon and it is about 200ft where I live, so when I went for SS I really noticed the altitude, partly because I hadn't run long distance in a long time (being a tennis player I did mostly sprints). I have been running a lot on my own, and have started a weight training class. I am still in search of the ever elusive first pull-up, right now I can only get to about 90 degrees.

You can make time if you really want to exercise. I'm a lazy bum and don't usually work out lol. But I plan to change that soon...

Ditto what hornet said...

hornetguy-- I know a guy who has a room very close to you -- who could help you with this ;). I tried to say hello to you when we were visiting on President's weekend but you weren't around. And finally, I assume you must be looking forward to never having to sit CQ again!

i havent got the appointee kit in yet so I dont know what the included workout is like. If its not to much trouble could anyone post it or give me a general indication of what its like? Id like to know so I can start on that stuff.
Thanks

I am in the same boat as wmfalcon, no appointee kit yet. If anyone knows a link to a site with the workout or would be willing to share. This would be helpful, also any other recommend exercises would be nice.

Nobility and wmfalcon, if you PM me your e-mail address, I can probably send you a scanned copy of the workouts

AFDAD2010, yup, Benjo is alive and singing (all the time!) next door. Sorry I missed you! Had to go back to Tejas and get the braces down. ugh. Maybe parent's weekend then?

I wouldn't worry about the altitude too much. You will run the AFT the second day of basic and you will be completely winded no matter what kind of shape you're in. First BCT is not as physically demanding as second because they know you need time to adjust to the altitude. By the time you head out to Jack's you really should be just fine. :) In time for the real fun!! Yay assault course!

Does anyone know if swimming helps adjust to the high altitude any quicker than running?
