Altman Program in Internation Study and Business

Sorry if this question is foolish, but how many people applied for the Altman Program and how many were accepted? I understand this is a new program but it sounds great.

No idea how many applied, but I think I read that they accepted 15. Ah yes, here it is. [Tulane University - Altman Program - News](http://tulane.edu/altman/news.cfm)

I agree with you, it does sound like an outstanding program.

Woah, I didn’t realize how small of a program it is! I just got a finalist letter by email a couple of days ago (same day I received the Paul Tulane Award in the mail, amazingly) and I’m excited beyond belief. I wish I knew about how many people I am up against for a spot! I have an interview coming up in a week and half or so via Skype but it’s only 10 minutes long; do you think that’s a good or bad thing?
Anyone else make it to the finalist stage or have any new insight? Much appreciated.

Neither good nor bad, just standard I am sure. They no doubt treat all finalists the same. I have no idea how many make it to the penultimate stage.

Just relax and be yourself, you will do great.

My daughter is a member of the first cohort of Altman Scholars. I believe there were approx. 80 applicants the first year. My guess is there will be quite a few more this year as awareness of the program has grown. She wasn’t aware of it until she attended an on-campus tour in March, 2012, after she had already been accepted to Tulane. It’s been a great program so far; it’s pretty structured given that you need to finish two degrees in four years, but there are so many benefits associated with the program. Even with the structured aspects of the program, my daughter has changed her liberal arts major twice :).

LOL, Kelly. I love that she has already changed her second major twice. It really shows both how flexible Tulane can be, even in such an intense program, and how exploratory the freshman year is. Students see things they hardly knew existed before arriving at college. That is great that she is enjoying the program.

Does she feel a comraderie with the others in her inaugural Altman group?

And do you happen to remember when she heard about her acceptance? I interviewed on March 7th and the final deadline (not the Early Consideration one which I did) was March 15th. Do you remember if she knew significantly before May 1st?

She heard in mid April. She did apply by the early decision deadline – she wanted to know before the May 1st acceptance deadline since she was trying to decide between Berkeley and Tulane. Her Altman Program acceptance was just another great reason why she chose Tulane!

is it too late to apply for the altman program now??

ladudejerry - I am afraid it appears to be too late. [Tulane University - Altman Program - Application Process](http://tulane.edu/altman/application-process.cfm) You can certainly contact them and see what the alternatives are.

Just out of curiosity, do you live in suburban St. Louis? I know that seems like an odd question, I can explain it later.

hmm ok. i sent them an email, hopefully they can reconsider. I just found out about this program and it is exactly what i’m looking for. and no, i do not live in st. louis

OK, hope they can help you. I asked about St. Louis because there is a suburb called Ladue, and I was wondering if you were making a play on that. Many of the students that live there attend some excellent private schools, as you do, so the two things made me wonder. Also Tulane is a popular choice of students from there.

I am from there, although I went to Ladue High.

i wish the decision could come out sooner. son has to choose between Tulane and UCs (Berkeley & UCLA).
Kellystraky, do you mind letting us know why you choose Tulane(Altman) over Berkeley?

I agree that sooner would be better, but if they let you know by mid-April, that gives him two weeks to decide. I guess that isn’t so bad, but I can imagine he (and you) would just like to have the decision made so it is done and the celebration can begin.

I don’t personally know anyone at UCLA any longer, but my niece from Monterey is finishing up her freshman year at Berkeley and is really enjoying her time there. It took some personal adjustment with respect to some of the really big classes, but other than that she has enjoyed pretty much everything about the experience so far.

We didn’t learn about the Altman Program until Destination Tulane on 3/16. Much to my DS’ dismay, he got home and logged on to apply only to find out the deadline was 3/15. DS sent an email explaining his situation and they gave him until 9am on 3/25 to apply. They handed out the brochure on the program at Destination Tulane, so we assumed it was open for applicants.

Just found out I’ve been selected as one of the 15 Altman Scholars! Not sure if I’m going to commit to Tulane or not yet - it depends on how the money works out - but it’s a great option and I’m really thrilled to have been selected. Has anyone else heard back about it?

yourloveisasong - Congrats! That is really great. I sure hope you can make it work, it seems like such a great and unique program. What kind of merit scholarship did Tulane give you?

They gave me the $25,000 merit scholarship, which was awesome, but not a whole lot of need based aid. I think we’re going to appeal the aid package and see what happens.

Great scholarship though. But I understand that still leaves a lot to cover. I hope it all works out. What is your other likely choice if this doesn’t work out? Davidson?

Thanks! I’m hoping it works out also. I know wherever I end up I’m going to have a great college experience. If I don’t go to Tulane I’ll probably go to Washington and Lee or Wake Forest.
