Altoona vs. University Park

Accepted 11/14 to College of Health and Human Development - Altoona

D accepted to 2nd choice but knew UP was a reach. She's not sure she wants to go to Altoona but Penn State is her 1st choice. Any comments for or against Altoona would be greatly appreciated! Thanks & Good luck to all applicants

Son’s friend was in the same boat two years ago. They went to Altoona and hated it…not sure if it was the school, personal feelings, student body, or a combination. Anyway, they transferred out after fresh year and now loving UDelaware.

Hi Mom2Girls2, my son has a lot of friends at UP and one of his good friends got accepted to Altoona. At first, he did not care for it. He was going to transfer but changed his mind and likes it a lot better now. He does drive up to UP almost every weekend to attend games and see friends. Not sure if that helps or not.

Also, if you don’t mind me asking, would you be willing to share your daughter’s stats. My son applied to Penn State early Sept. and has had the same status for about a month. He is definitely on the bubble with his stats. 1670 SAT, 25 ACT and 3.1 uw 3.7 weighted GPA. He is applying to the college of education.

Good luck to her daughter on making her decision.

Hi motherto5…Thanks for the insight. D was accepted to Drexel about a month ago & waiting on a few other choices that are not rolling admission so I’m sure she won’t be making her mind up any time soon. Stats below…Good luck to your son!

GPA 3.2 out of 4.0 private school - strong math & science grades
ACT 25
SAT 1670
2 great teacher recommendations
1 counselor recommendation - not read
12 years dance
tons of school extra curriculars
community service
work

Mom2Girls2, my son and your daughters grades, stats, work and ECs are really, really similar. Did your daughter apply for Summer session as well as Fall? My son’s top 3 choices in order are Penn State, Delaware and Pitt. He did get into Pitt but like you said will have to wait awhile to make a final decision. Son was also accepted to West Chester.

motherto5…I forgot to mention that she applied end of September but didn’t send in SAT scores until end of October. She applyed for summer also. She did declare a major so that may be why she heard this early.

You’re right, they are similar. My daughter applied to Pitt & Delaware also but no word. I can’t remember if she applied undecided though. Hopefully your son will get into UP. But Pitt will be a great experience. Sounds like they both want large campus life.

Thanks for sharing all your info. My son had all his stuff (grades, transcript, SATs etc) in by end of September and his status hasn’t changed at all. He actual did declare a major of Special Education. He applied Psychology major to Pitt because he can’t major in Special Education there. But he definitely wants to go to a big school. Again, good luck to your daughter on her decision!

It looks like I’m in the same boat. I have a 3.4 GPA with a 1650 SAT in one sitting (Penn State doesn’t superscore tests) I applied UP first choice and Altoona second choice. I also applied as a meteorology major. If I get stuck at Altoona I probably won’t attend. Then again… I’m OOS (Virginia)

Got accepted into Altoona today. Will be declining the offer, as I can’t see myself spending two years there. Not my thing at all. Was a tad disappointed I didn’t get into UP, but I got into my reach so it wasn’t a big deal.

I think the Altoona campus is attractive.

The branch campuses offer much smaller class sizes than the main campus.

Being less than an hour away from U. Park makes it possible to attend many activities if you or a friend have a car.

There are some thoughtful comments about branch campuses on this thread–

adam0320 what were your stats if you dont mind me asking?

^^^^^
Terrible. I was expecting altoona. But decided to at least give it a shot.
SAT-1740
GPA-3.4-3.5 (depending how you calculate)
Will have 33 hours completed through joint enrollment come may, so I guess in theory I’d only have to spend one year at altoona. Still not worh it imo compared to my other options.

My d ended up going to Altoona. She wanted Penn State so badly that she is doing the 2X2. She didn’t get a decision until January and by that time, she couldn’t get on campus housing. She is at Nittany Pointe. Great apartments but there is alot of drinking there. She doesn’t drink, but she was able to find a small group of friends who don’t either. She will be moving to UP with these friends next fall. The good thing about Altoona is that the gen ed classes are small and you get to know the teachers. You don’t get overwhelmed right away. By the time she gets to UP, the classes will be smaller because she’ll be in her major. The point is, although she was disappointed, it turned out ok for her. It is a lovely campus. Best of luck to your D.

Im still waiting to hear back from PSUUP, my first and only choice. My scores are 1850 SAT, 3.61 WGPA, 27 ACT. I know Im a little bit above the averages for the other campuses, and a little below for UP, but because I choose summer session, do you think I have a chance of getting in?

hey EastCoaster00-

i have about the same SATs except a higher GPA and i said yes to summer and i still havent heard. it stinks that their decision is mostly GPA but your SATs are great so its up in the air. PSUUP is my first and only choice too, so im definitely dying right now. lol but if i got in for summer, i wouldnt even hesitate to say yes because my sister went for summer and she said it was the BEST decision she ever made.
