My Dad went to Yale.
I have around a 3.8 (4.2 W) GPA
Haven't gotten my SATs yet (I'm a Junior)
I'm taking a few APs.
No hook, but pretty good extracurriculars.

I doubt I'll get in, but how much of a chance do you think I have?
I'm a female, I want to go into Engineering.

Legacy is NOT a hook at Yale. I’d say it depends on where your 3.8 comes from. If your 3.8 comes from a school with massive grade deflation or a top prep or magnet school, you’ve got a shot. For someone with no hooks, you really need to be in the top 5% of your class. Many would argue that a hookless person at a non-elite high school needs to be in the top 2 or 3 people in their class and I would argue with that.

I’m smart… but can be lazy. I want to stay in Cali, but I thought I’d go to the east coast if I can get into a really good school. I’ll probably just end up going to Berkeley, which I’m totally cool with, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to apply to Yale, Brown, and Cornell?

I’m a female interested in engineering so that helps…
Yale- I thought I’d have a chance since my dad went but I guess that’s not true ha
Cornell- Easiest Ivy to get into, but I also know it’s very depressing there… (and is also great for engineering)
and Brown- because I hear it’s one of the friendliest and happiest top colleges to be at.

I probably don’t have a chance, I realize that. But do you think I’m just straight out wasting my time?

It’s kinda hard to say without knowing your ECs or SAT score.
But really, it’s kinda hard for anyone to say. You just have to give it your best shot :)

I think a 3.8 UW GPA is pretty good. Keep up your grades and that really shouldn’t be a problem. A female interested in engineering will definitely help. Maybe not so much at Yale but at other schools, especially like Cornell…where you have to actually apply to a specific school within the college.

ahhh… see i wasn’t aware that you don’t apply to a certain department in Yale ha… shows how much I know…

It doesn’t seem like being a legacy would give me that much of a boost to better my chance. Kind of like a 9% chance to a 10% chance haha… doesn’t seem theres a way in hell that I’ll get in, so why waste my time applying, right?

Does Brown allow you to apply to a certain department?

Of the Ivys, which would you say has the most laid back student body? I don’t want to go to a cutthroat school.

And in your opinion would it be worth it to go to Cornell over Berkeley? I hear it is very depressing.

Your questions can probably better be answered if you posted them in the college search and selection page or in the forums for those specific colleges.

Cornell is not very depressing. Cold and grey in the winter? Yes, but that doesn’t mean the students aren’t happy. Ithaca is a great little college town.

Is Cornell worth it over Berkeley? That depends on how much extra cash your family has, how important the weather is to you, how you feel about school size, how important it is to you to be near an urban area, where you want to locate after college (if you’re staying in CA, you’ll have a better network coming from Berkeley, if you want to end up in NYC, Cornell will be better networked), etc. Don’t make the mistake that Cornell is a match because you’ve got good grades and good ECs.

Yale is not cutthroat. People are pushing themselves to be the best, not to “beat” other people. It’s a very cooperative campus.

AdmissionsAddict forgot to mention how many gorgeous ladies (some riding bicycles…in the best way possible) have taken to wearing tights in the winter at Cornell.
