Alumni Distinguished Scholarship Competition

@Eeeee127 Were announcements made?

Yes I received mail today that I didn’t make finalist @itsgettingreal17

My dd got a call yesterday to schedule her interview. Top 66 test scores on the test were called. Now to do well on the interview. I have to say that MSU did an excellent job selling themselves. I was impressed and I really did not want her to go back to MI (she was born there), but stay closer to us in the south. So far the only downside is the cold in my mind.

@Eeeee127

did you hear by email or snail mail?

@acmartin999 congrats to your daughter! Btw there are plenty of ppl from the south such as Florida who come to Michigan for college they are prepared for the tundra weather it’s really not that bad just make sure to bundle up and be prepared for bipolar weather like it is raining right now in Michigan in winter lol also I thought there r 120 scholarships total? @Wien2NC I got it in my mailbox physical envelope

@Wien2NC she received phone call so they could schedule the interview time. They said an email would be sent with details.

@Eeeee127 I actually went to college in Michigan. And my husband’s family is nearby, so there are people around to help her if needed. But my problem is that we went to college in Michigan and could never get back out. It was good for school, but we didn’t really want to stay for 15 years. We are happy to be in the South now. She really would prefer not to go up North, but was very impressed with the department she is interested in, research, and study abroad.

@acmartin999 she doesn’t have to stay in Michigan in fact only 66% of msu grads stay in Michigan http://statenews.com/article/2017/01/most-msu-grads-stay-in-state-head-to-bigger-cities and for umich it’s only 34% so plenty of ppl leave and find jobs in other states. What state are you from?

@Eeeee127 I am originally from Maryland. Ended up going to school in Michigan and then staying for a total of 15 years. We finally moved back south 10 years ago. I love my friends and friends in Michigan and was impressed with MSU. It will all come down to money.:slight_smile:

Notifications have begun. We got a voicemail from Bess yesterday and a follow up email. She called my son this morning and confirmed that he is an ADS recipient. Good luck to the other finalists!

Congratulations! My son got the phone call last week and letter today. Really nice that they could let students know this early. We’re still waiting to hear from other schools, this makes the process so much easier.

Those of you who were awarded the ADS, are you (or your kids ;)) taking the deal?My son won the freshman distinguished scholarship which is full tuition from the same test as the ADS. He also has national merit scholarship and a professorial assisted ship. He’s going into Physics, he’s just not sure -his other choices have incredibly strong physics undergrad (Notre dame, UChicago, UM). MSU Grad Physics is super strong, but undergrad not so much. Just wonderi

I won ADS (admittedly cried some happy tears when I got the call) but I’m not yet sure if I’ll accept it - it mostly depends on if I get into Princeton or Harvard because of my long-standing Ivy dreams. I also applied for a couple other large scholarships but I have a feeling those won’t work out. I was also awarded the Professorial Assistantship, so it’s pretty appealing to be making money off of my undergraduate career.

@m24sweet I’m also an (astro)physics major considering MSU for next year (and a National Merit scholar.) My impression (from the physics faculty and my friends who’ve gone there) is that MSU undergrad phys is amazing if your focus is on research (esp. if nuclear phys interests you). It’s a tough choice to make though, and I wish your son luck…and maybe I’ll see him next year in East Lansing :slight_smile:

@pey4343 congratulations on the ADS! That’s awesome! My son is going into to talk to the honors undergrad physics chair next week. I love MSU-the campus, the students, the profs, the sports. My son does too but he always thought he’d be here for grad school. This is throwing him for a loop. After he was awarded the DFS, National Merit and PA he started to seriously consider UG. Today he got a scholarship-a pretty nice one to UM, not as good as MSU but enough to put it back on table. Good luck with Princeton and Harvard! If you end up w MSU I’m sure you’ll do awesome. Thanks for feedback!
