alumni interview invitation question

so I recently received an interview invitation via email from a Dartmouth alumni.
Questions:
1. Does this mean that Dartmouth is interested in me or does everyone that applied get invited?
2. How important is this interview? How much would it hurt me to skip it? (not lazy, I just don't want to miss school and drive like 2 hours)
3. What kind of questions should I expect (from past experience)? tips?
4. If i can't make it, should I email the alumni back?

“Interviews are optional. You are welcome to decline the invitation. Doing so will not put you at a disadvantage in the admissions process.”

answer to Q1: Dartmouth would like to interview everyone. Your invite is no indication of your eventual admit/denial. Both zero chancers and shoo ins are treated equally when it comes to interviews – they don’t pre sort before sending contact info out.

yeah i figured as much. that’s too bad

OP, a two-hour drive each way? At that distance, I think you could legitimately ask about talking on Skype or Facetime.

There was a thread from last year about the questions asked. It varied from alum to alum. Some seemed to ask stock questions; some were more creative.

Yes! If you cannot make it, definitely reply to the interviewer. Politeness and good manners will serve you well in the college application process and the rest of your life. Hope that doesn’t sound too preachy, but I look very favorably on job applicants who reply – and reply promptly.

^Agree. If my kiddo were asked to drive two hours for a college interview, I’d tell her to decline. It’s just not all that. Now maybe if it were for a big scholarship committee interview, it could persuade dad!
