I applied to Middlebury RD, but did not indicate on the supplement that I wished to have an alumni interview, something I mildly regretted. Today, I received an e-mail from a Middlebury alumna who said that the office of admission gave her my name so I could have an interview with her! Needless to say, I was a bit flabbergasted. I'm not sure what I should do about this situation. I'd think that declining an offered interview might send the wrong message, but I don't know if I'm prepared for this opportunity.

So, what should I do? Should I point out the error to the alumna? E-mail the admissions office? Or accept the interview and try to squeeze it into the very busy next couple of weeks?

Hm, I was under the impression that you had to sign up for an interview by the end of October…

If you want to go to Middlebury, accept the interview. Their not calling you is one thing, but that they did, for you to decline would be a bad move IMO. It’s no big deal really in terms of pressure to “perform”, but certainly your interest in the school is either there or it’s not.

On the other hand, if you really don’t care whether you get in or not, by all means decline the invitation and dont waste the interviewers time. With all due respect, I am sure their time is at least as valuable as yours.

Drought… I think that may have applied to ED candidates. Otherwise it was a box you could check on the supplement.

I apologize if my original post made it sound like I did not think the interviewer’s time as as valuable as mine. That was certainly not my intention in the least, and I truly appreciate any time that interviewers, or anyone else, for that matter, take to talk with me.

Regarding my interest in Middlebury, I would be pleased to attend, but it is not my top choice. I do not, however, wish to jeopardize my chances of admission by refusing an interview and thereby displaying a lack of interest in the school. So, I’m still somewhat torn at this point.

Phanatic, I fail to see the dilemma. Simply do the interview. You’ll likely enjoy it and learn a lot about a great school.

Because they asked for you to do the interview, I think to decline the interview would show a lack of interest and would hurt your chances of admission. I would do the interview. It will help give you a sense of whether Midd is a good fit for you. I would go in with an open mind. You may found out that you have more interest in Midd than you previously thought. If the interview does not work out, chances are that Midd is not a good fit for you and that you are better off elsewhere. Things usually work out for a reason.

All right. Thank you all for your input; I believe I will talk to the alumna and see if there’s a mutually convenient time for us to meet.

urbanslaughter, I think my main reason for believing that it might be a dilemma is that I’m not as well-versed in regards to Middlebury as I am in regards to the other schools for which I have interviewed; I thought that might lead to a not-so-great interview. I know quite a bit about Middlebury, since I have applied, after all, but I could practically recite the other colleges’ websites to them. So I’m mostly lacking confidence, I guess. :/

Do a little research, relax and don’t be afraid to be yourself for the interview. When I was applying, I had a fantastic interview because I was totally open with the interviewer and very frank. That makes for the best type of interview and turns it into a conversation.

Yeah Modadunn you’re correct, I went back and looked at the Middlebury supplement I submitted and I checked the interview box but an interviewer hasn’t contacted me yet… I hope this isn’t a bad sign…

phanatic… Here’s an out for you. The current website is a little late dated. It’s not horrid, but in just a few more weeks they are rolling out a whole new website. And actually, I thnk it’s going to be great. Currently only students, faculty and staff can see it or those with an email account with the school I suppose. Early feb they are going to release to public (or so they say). So in some respects, you can be off the hook slightly on not being completely up to date via the website because there will be a while new look and tons of new and improved content.

phanatic : did you have your interview yet? If you did… how did it go?
I have one this Saturday and the same exact thing happened to me. I’m quite nervous about it.

You too, gchan? Hmm. That’s unusual.

And no, I haven’t had my interview yet. It’s on Wednesday at a coffee shop.

If I owned a coffee shop, I’d offer a “college interview” special. :-)

yea. quite unusual. mine is going to be at starbucks.

The same thing happened to me too. I am going to accept because it does send the wrong message to refuse to be interviewed.
