alumni interview

I just got called for my first alumni interview.. and it's with Dartmouth! yay! Have any of you already had alumni interviews, and what kinds of questions did they ask? Was the emphasis on Dartmouth or on you? Also, he said to dress casually, so a pair of khakis and a nice shirt would be ok, right? Thanks!

Khakis, a nice shirt, and oxfords would work.

The interview's meant to be half informative, half evaluative. This means they'll probably start off asking you a bunch of questions about yourself (favorite academic subject, extracurriculars, favorite book, etc.) and then ask if you have any questions for them.

Three tips for a great interview

-Basic manners (firm handshake, thank-you note, no weird behavior or excessive gesticulations, etc.)
-Act interested! Don't be scared of your interviewer... if you see a picture of them in their Dartmouth rugby shirt on the wall, ask them about it! They love their alma mater- make sure they know you do too
-It's always nice when students have done their research. If they ask you what your favorite subject is and you say "French... speaking of which, that's one of the reasons why I was so attracted to Dartmouth- I couldn't believe the foreign exchange program! And I think it's so great that the D-Plan provides for so much flexibility in studying abroad." Bingo- two birds with one stone.

I just did like track pants and a wife-beater and it was fine

...haha?

can we call for an alumni interview if we already had an on-campus interview?

Nah, your alumni interviewer should contact you if you've applied ED.

what about for regular decision?

I had on on-campus ionterview and they called me up for an alumni interview...does this mean anything?lol...probably not, but they both went well. I wore a pair of dockers, a blue stafford shirt, dressy shoes, and a red tie (peopel call red a power color...lol).

My Alum-Interviewer recommended I bring a resume (the thing we give to teachers who write recommendatinos for us), but I wasn't told to bring anything to the on campus one... so, maybe you should bring a resume and, if he doesn't ask for one, non-chalantly bring it up in the convorsation, like if they ask you what you've done, tell them about it and then tell them you have a resume and they may have a copy if they'd like... or something to that effect.

Sorry, a little off-topic but:

One of the things I've noticed about most of the alumni interviewers I've heard about is that they are all so gung-ho Dartmouth! I have friends who tell me how they'll have interviewers with Dartmouth pictures hanging on their walls, or on their desks. I have friends who tell me how their interviewers get so excited talking about Dartmouth they'll bring out a photo album during the interview!

I've never ever seen this with any other college- not Harvard, not Yale, not even Princeton. It kind of makes you even more excited to be applying, doesn't it?

In the parent's forum there is a thread titled

Interview questions you should know about which was compiled by a bunch of parents who are alumni interviews many are ivy interviews (verone, Northstarmon is a harvard interviewer) who give excellent insight into the process along with some important dos and donts. Some parents have even shared their kids interview experiences at places such as Georgetown and MIT. It doesn't hurt to look

To all of you who are interviewing all the best. Relax and Just be your self.

My daughter had her Alumni interview. She said it was very casual. They didn't ask specific questions. They had great conversation for over an hour. They were very interested in her and her interests. Told her she was the most enthusiastic interviewee they have ever met.

gret advice... I had an hour+ interview as well. Great convorsation.

what are good questions to ask an alumni interviewer (since they probably don't know much about current academic life, etc....)????
