Despite the 2015 NACAC agreement by member colleges to stop asking formally in written materials where else applicants are applying, it’s clear from applicant interview reports here on CC that alumni interviewers sometimes still ask the question. What is the best way to answer?
“Although Georgetown is my clear top choice and perfect for me. I have a few other schools I am considering if my dream of being a Hoya doesn’t work out in the end. A good range of schools.”
it is a completely unethical question. So give an answer that is in your best interests. Pick several of their peers, preferably ones ranked slightly higher and one slightly lower. Everyone should have a safety, so mention State. And kids like to dream so it doesn’t hurt to throw in an obvious reach.
I wouldn’t name another. They may think you’re a better match elsewhere or that they’re your safety. You still need to convince them of your interest in their college. I might suggest something like PB started with, follow it with a good reason, not generic. Then just mention you did a wide search. Maybe close with another reason for this college.
When they write their report, you don’t want confusion.
If you are uncomfortable, deflect the question. Or provide an answer that shows you have compiled a thoughtful list based on something other than USNWR rankings, and that this isn’t merely a moon shot for you.
