Alumni interviews?

Hi --

My S is applying ED to Dartmouth. The check was cashed a couple of weeks ago, so we know they have the pre-app/ED forms. According to their website, alumni interviews are initiated by the local alum.

Here's my question: If we haven't heard anything by the end of the month, should my S contact the admissions office -- or do we simply assume no area alum was available?

DD's alum interview was in Nov, so I would hang on a little longer.

I am an '09 who applied RD. I was not contacted by an interviewer so I contacted the alumni rep in charge of interviews in my geographic area. She left a phone message assuring me I would be contacted soon. Still no contact. My mom called with only a few days before the interview deadline. This time the alumni rep called with an apology and assigned another interviewer.

Thanks. I figured they'd be interviewing for a bit after the ED deadline -- but there are so many details to juggle in this process, I didn't want something to slip between the cracks.

I keep telling myself I'll be much more relaxed about all of this with #2 :-).

Hmm. I hope we don't have to jump the hoops you did -- but it obviously worked out, since you're there (congratulations!).

Just in case we need to do something similar -- did you contact the college to get the name of the person who's in charge of alumni interviews in your area?

Thanks.

the alumni get a list and the ed candidates should be marked and interviewed first...in my son08 case the local alumni called last minute and apologized cause he didnt see on his list the ed students..so my son had to rush and meet him that evening outside a donut shop lol.
it was a few days before thansgiving...so give it a few weeks but dont hesitate to email and push the issue if late november
However!!! the alumi interview means nothing unless you come off as a real jerk..someone said it can never help you and once in a blue moon it hurts a candidate...so dont get overly nervous
also there is a good rule of alumni interviews..have questions ready abour the interviewers days at dartmouth...was he a frat brother..was she a member of singing grops, their doc trip..etc..they love talking about their good times at dartmouth

Thanks for the response; DS had a good on-campus interview, but the website seems to indicate that alumni interviews are pretty much a given, if interviewers are available; in any case, I won't worry much about it -- and will pass on the info to DSl. (Actually, he's far calmer about the whole thing than I am - lol).

And thanks for tips on interview topics, as well.

I think my alumni interview was a huge help. I applied ED, and we had lunch at a TGIF at the mall where I was working. That was in mid-November. We really hit it off. It's not going to swing you too far one way or the other, but if it meant nothing they wouldn't go to the trouble.

Thanks for responding. Good to hear a variety of perspectives.

Hey Athena, hope that all is going well.

My D also had a good experience with her alumni interview. They met a Blackrock where he worked, and it just so happened that they were reading the same book. The interview just took off an took on a life of its own. He really availed himself to her regarding follow up questions after the interview, sent her a note of congratulations upon her admission and a follow-up note when she decided to matriculate.

Semamom - you will be more relaxed with #2 - or perhaps a different kind of anxiety. We will see in a couple of years.

where do alumni interviews occur??

The alumni who is interviewing you will ususally set up the place. D went to alumni interviews at Starbucks, and at the office space of her interviewer.

Don't panic , just be yourself. all the best

I was never contacted by my alumni when I applied for RD. I got in RD
