Alumni Interviews

I know that not everyone will receive an invitation for an alumni interview. I'm curious, though, about what states the people who have had interviews are from as well as whether they are REA or RD. Anyone willing to share?

I’ve had my interview for REA in Colorado already, and my invitation came about a week after the REA deadline.

The list of areas that utilize the alumni program is here: <a href=“Page Not Found : Admission Volunteers : Stanford University”>Page Not Found : Admission Volunteers : Stanford University;

I live in a state that is on the Alumni Interview list, but I have yet to receive an invitation to interview. I know that they can’t offer an interview to everyone, but it does worry me since I applied REA. I really hope that my application is not looked upon differently without one.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t receive an invitation yet but I can tell you this: your application will definitely not be looked upon any differently without one. The Dean of Admissions said that in about 10% of cases the interview makes a difference, and I suspect that the majority of those were cases where the interview raised red flags about the legitimacy of the original application.

Fingers crossed that that is the case! Thanks for your response!

Anyone else willing to share?

I received an email the day after the REA deadline, and scheduled mine the day after that. My interviewer told me that the lists were supposed to go out a long time ago but apparently a lot of them got sent out pretty late (I was the first responder she had), so she was pretty frantic and all. She also said her interview sheets are supposed to be turned in Nov 18th, which is in like two days (so I’m guessing no more interviews after then??). I’m not sure if it’s the same across the nation, though. I’m from the frigid Midwest.

I had mine, from the Seattle area. Got a response the day after I submitted. Honestly, like what tankfrank said, its not a big deal. I was actually kind of mad that I got invited to one. The way I looked at it, doing well on the interview won’t really help you, but performing poorly will. However, even though they emphasized that they were optional, I still felt like declining it would raise a red flag. So basically you have to go if you get an invitation and have to do well, but no good comes of it.

I don’t know, I wouldn’t necessarily go as far as to say that they’re completely useless, especially if you have questions to ask, but it’s rare that your interview would really make that big of a positive difference. Personally, I think my interview was an exception. I got a very enthusiastic alumni that was really interested in what I was doing and really wanted to advocate for me, but I still don’t know what kind of weight, if any, his report will pull.

Fingers crossed!

Whatever the case, no one who is apply RD should expect one given the paucity of available interviewers for the EA round. First things first.

Well, it is 11/19 and I never received an offer for an REA interview. I’m trying not to worry about it. Just curious…are there any other REA applicants who did not interview even though they live in one of the states where interviews are being held?

Here’s what the website says:
For the 2014–15 admission cycle the Office of Undergraduate Admission will operate the optional alumni interview program (based on applicant’s high school location) in the following areas: Chicago, Raleigh-Durham and Washington, D.C. as well as the following states: Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

Interviews will also be offered internationally in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Luxemburg, Mexico (Mexico City and Nueva León only), the Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. New interview locations will be added over the next several years.

@rungreen. Do not worry about getting an interview or not. Stanford is still in its pilot phase of rolling out their interviews in the areas posted above. Rest assured and take heart…MOST students who get admitted are not interviewed.

…if you notice…I don’t see the large countries China, India, Canada or even the largest states California or Florida even on that list…

Thank you, @gravitas2‌. My head tells me that your response is the rational way to look at it! My heart, though, wants to make sure that I’ve done everything possible to be considered in a positive light. I guess that all I can do now is wait until notifications are made next month. Good luck to all of the REA applicants.
