Am I a California Resident?

I lived in California almost my entire life, I moved to Oklahoma about a few months ago. If I am technically living with in California this summer with my mother, does that make me a California resident if I leave back to Oklahoma to finish high school? I will be in Oklahoma less than a year and to be a resident in a state you have to reside there for at least a year. Thanks in advance for the help, I'd rather go to college in my home state and not have to pay triple the amount.

IF you no longer live and attend school in california, you may no longer a california resident.

Is your mother a california resident or is she just there for the summer? Who is your custodial parent?

Here are the residency requirements for OU: [In-State/Out-of-State Tuition Policy - Admissions - The University of Oklahoma](http://www.ou.edu/admissions/home/resident_tuition_regulations.html)

If your father (I assume your parents are divorced) is an OK resident by the time school starts you will be as well. Look at the FAQs for further info. If you moved there a few months ago you will hit a year next March.

Can you clarify?

Do you live with your father in OK during the school year?

Do you VISIT your mom in Calif during the summer?

Will you be graduating from a OK high school?

Do you want to go to college in Calif or OK?

Thanks for the responses. I am living in California right now. I’ve been here for almost 3 months. Prior to that I was in Oklahoma for a few months. I’m technically enrolled in school in Oklahoma. I’d rather go to California in college because I feel more accepted than in Oklahoma because of my ethnicity. My mom is currently a resident of California. I just want to know how strict the UC’s are when determining if you are a California Resident. Does staying at my mothers for 3 months count? If it does when I go back to Oklahoma Ill be there less than a year. Will being there less than a year make me a California Resident that’s just been absent out of state? Thanks again for responses.

If you don’t graduate from a California high school then you will have a very difficult time being considered a California resident for purposes of enrollment in California public universities.

You will be an OK resident.

See if you can slog through this. <a href=“UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel | UCOP”>UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel | UCOP; Then you need to speak with someone.

For CA, this may be complicated based on why you moved to OK, how you showed intent to reside there (eg, changing your drivers license.)

I am not disputing what anyone else posted- just saying that you may be in a grey area. Even if something seems clear, they will likely run you through a review, based on the OK details.

“If a minor student’s parents are separated or divorced, the residence of the parent with whom the minor maintains his principal place of abode will be considered the residence of the minor.
The principal place of abode is typically the residence of the parent with whom the student spends the majority of his time. Thus, the principal place of abode for a student who spends the school year with one parent and summers with the other would be the home of the parent with whom the student lives during the school year.”

If you finish hs in OK, are gone from CA that long, your case substantially weakens.

You have to get your bearings, then contact the school.

How about falls apart?
