My dad and his brothers were the first generation in their family to go to college, but my dad dropped out in his sophomore year. On the other hand, my mom went to college. Would I be considered a first generation college student? should I phrase it as first to graduate?

You are not a first generation college student because your mom and dad both went.

I’m not sure how you would be the “first to graduate” unless you’ve already graduated. Once you’ve achieved graduation then yes, you are the first to graduate, and you can proudly say so.

But it sounds like you are looking for a hook for you application. This one wouldn’t really apply for your applications.

If you mom went to college, how would you be a first generation college student?

College applications don’t ask, Are you first gen? Rather they ask for the college histories of both of your parents, where they went to college and if they earned a degree. Since schools use slightly different definitions of who is first gen (eg. attend vs. graduate from college), each school will then determine if a candidate fits their definition.

How many other people have read this string and laughed out loud?

^I don’t follow your humor M2b2b. What/who is so funny?
