Am I a first generation student?

Hello, all. First off, I'm not sure if this in the right form and I apologize if it's not. Anyway, both of my parents were enrolled in college (one public, one private), however each dropped out in less than a year. Neither grandparent, or other immediate family member has gone, except my aunt (who has a BA, if I remember correctly). Also, two of my half-siblings (dad's side) have degrees, but I never see these people and am not influenced by them whatsoever. So am I a first generation student? And if not, how can I be described?

You probably would be considered first generation, but each college has different policies.

That being said, don’t worry about it too much. There really isn’t a box you check that says “first-gen” - you fill out your parents’ education and the colleges figure out the rest. So whether or not you are first gen shouldn’t affect how you fill out your application

Ah, I always thought that could be considered a “hook.” Well I’m only a rising sophomore but, if all continues well, I should be looking at a couple of Ivies and other top tier schools (if it matters).

Any other opinions? Insight? (bump)

It isn’t a hook at most places, but other schools use it to identify special programs, scholarships, mentors, etc.
