Hi.
I am currently applying to some summer internships, many of which require that you be a sophomore during time of application. This is my first year of college. But according to my Fall 2015 transcript, I officially have 50 credit hours. Of these, 18 are designated as transfer credits from high school dual credit programs. The other 32 are listed as hours undertaken at my university (though a little more than half of them are from AP credit by exam).
So, should I just apply for the programs and put myself down as a sophomore, as my transcript clearly says 50 total credit hours undertaken?
Would really appreciate some help!
I’d think that by “sophomore,” they are looking for people who have 2 years of college under their belt. I’d reach out to the internship places and ask them directly.
Yeah, it kind of depends - I would ask. Usually for internships it means that you have been in college for two years, as it’s not just about the number of credits but also other experiences and major classes that you’ve gotten to that dual credits from HS won’t get you.
I’d say you’re eligible to apply, although you’re less likely to get the internship if you haven’t taken many classes in the major.
If you intend to graduate in four years (not early), you could say something like “first year student with sophomore standing by credits”.
If your course work relevant to the jobs is more advanced than frosh normally have, you may want to indicate that. For example, if you are a chemical engineering major, it can help if you are in organic chemistry and chemical process analysis, rather than general chemistry, since that can make “sophomore” status more real from the employer viewpoint.
Re #4
Sophomore standing is typically 30 to 59.9 credits.
Say you’re a sophomore. Worst they can do is reject your application. Besides, you’re technically telling the truth.
I stand corrected. I meant to say 31-60 credits sophomore.
From a college’s standpoint you are a freshman your first semester no matter how many hours you have. Second semester you are ranked according to your hours.
In my opinion these people are wanting someone with the experience of living and functioning on a college campus for a year. However, they might be very impressed with your record. Is there any way for you to explain, or is all you are given is a box to check?
