Am I a good candidate for Wharton ED?

Penn (Wharton) is my first choice college, and I would really appreciate it if you could provide some feedback about my chances for acceptance (although I know that it is quite impossible to tell) or suggestions for improvement.
Thanks in advance to everyone for taking the time in advance!

Recs:-US History teacher: absolutely loves me, picked me to be president of Asian American Alliance (she's the sponsor)
-French teacher

Thank you all very much for bearing with me this far! I really appreciate your input. Please feel free to tell me what I need to improve on, especially about extracurriculars concering business!

First of all, need your unweighted GPA. Your SAT score is definitely in par with Wharton, still people get rejected with these high scores. After all, its Wharton. Your ECs are good, and its good that you have showed dedication towards piano. Volunteer work is good too, but I get a feeling that you also want to do pre-med. Am I right?? I applied to Wharton last year, didn’t get in but your scores and ECs are way better.

And about showing interest in business, remember what you do now doesn’t matter that much!! your future plans have no impact on decision. I interviewed with Wharton alumni, and one thing they want to see is LEADERSHIP skills. You don’t have to be a president of every club. It could be anything, and I see you being president of two clubs. That’s good, but the thing is that every kid who applies to Wharton is president of something. you know.

Now your chances…a HIGH reach. Good Luck though!!! Apply to berkeley, mit, carnegie mellon, NYU. You should be able to get in NYU, carnegie mellon. MIT chances look good too…

I just realized I put up my first SAT subscores instead of my final SAT subscores!

Revised SAT Scores:
CR: 800
Math: 780
Writing: 760
Essay: 9
Total: 2340

Also, some info I left out:
ACT:
English: 36
Math: 34
Reading: 36
Science: 31
Composite: 34

sunny750, I’m not sure how to calculate my unweighted GPA since my school uses the 5.0 scale. Could somebody tell me how to do this?
And you’re kinda right, I did want to do pre-med before, but now I’ve decided to go into the business field because I find finance to be very interesting.
Hopefully, they won’t think my EC’s are too science-y!!

Do you have some more suggestions about how to demonstrate my leadership besides officer positions in clubs? In your interview, do they ask for business experience, like starting your own business?

I am also applying to berkeley, mit, nyu, ut austin, u of michigan, and cornell.
Is Carnegie Mellon good for business?

Oh and thanks for the advice btw!

Why don’t you add HYPS to your list?
You really have some solid stats.
Gook luck!

you have great scores and great commitments (numerous piano awards). I also dont think you need to retake the ACT, especially considering your 2340 on the SAT. You have a great chance!

Can you chance me at: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/540557-my-chances-wharton-ed.html

I think you have more of a chance at HYPS than at Wharton…Just because they really really want people with business-related EC’s [from my understanding].
In any case,
NYU is no problem for you.
I’m not sure about Berkeley. If you live in California, then you’re definitely in.
Cornell should be a match too.

haha. Etoile_x , are you a fellow wild cat?

wait. I lied.
you go to west.

OMG dude. what if the wharton adcoms were narrowing down applicants from Plano and they had to pick one of us?! that would be HORRIBLE! our stats are pretty much identical. X[

lol
wait i thought you weren’t applying to upenn??
you better not stand btw me and penn
cuz i will hunt you down
rawr

hehe jk
why don’t you do a chancing thread? so you can hear what other ppl say

hey etoile_x..for unweighted you basically count all As as 4.0, Bs as 3.0, Cs as 2.0. . At interview, they DO NOT care about whether you will start your own business or not. If you really want to show the admission committee that you’re interested in business than start interning at a bank, or just get a job. Let me tell you this, admission people LOVE when they see a smart student like you WORKING!!

Leadership position could be anything- create a group out of school helping clean your neighborhood, help elderly people in the neighborhood with tasks, or JUST start a piano tutoring for free or for money!! lol.. Also Carnegie Mellon is definitely good for business. Lot of Carnegie grads go to Wall street, and I believe you would like to go there..

It seems you’re definitely interested in Wharton, and I would love to see you get in. So, I will give you these basic tips for interview:
try explaining to the guy why several of your ecs are sciency?? or explain that in an essay. BE HONEST!! and show them why you’re really interested in business!! you know
KNOW your strength and weaknesses!! it is usually a single most important question in ANY interview. this question usually separates people who get in wharton, and people who don’t
know the current issues when you go to interview, and BE HONEST!! and definitely show interest in Wharton! ask him questions, questions THAT are not answered online. this guy who would interview you is probably a smart ass, and graduated form UPenn. (your interviewer could be a science major) and if you just ask questions that are answered online, then its a minus point for you

GOOD LUCK! and if you have any questions, message me!

8 APs in your senior year. Requires some real courage and ambition. Good Luck!

AP French 4 and french 5? it’s the same exam, unless u did language one year and you’re doing lit your senior year

stats, environm, pysch, micro = easiest ap’s ever (or so i’ve heard.)

why does getting a job look so great to admissions people? most of the people who go to our school work at ice cream and clothes shops. i know it shows initiative, responsibility, etc – but honestly, these people are just bored, want to socialize, and earn some money. that can’t be seen as “admirable”.

I think that you definitely appear to be a good candidate for Wharton; however, your class rank is a tad mediocre, but I suppose that’s the result of going to a large high school school in a bourgeois suburb like Plano. I have family friends who have gotten into Wharton with sub 2200 scores; yet, I have seen others who have sh**loads of internships and 2300+ scores get rejected. I suppose it’s all hard to say, but I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully we’ll both be in the Class of 2013

Looks good to me; good on paper, evidence of leadership, varied interests but also great achievement in 1-2 main areas of extracurriculars.

Do well on the essay / interview (i.e. show some flair and maturity, not woodenness) and you can tip the odds more heavily in your favor.

Doesn’t Penn only do children for Legacy Kids? Well, interviews at Penn at least. I’m not sure how their alumni interviews work…

I’m pretty sure that I’ve heard from a Penn Rep doing a presentation that they don’t require interviews.
and yes I’m applying, just for laughs though. haha. My chances are slim to none.

interviews are not required (not offered to all, but are offered to non-legacies), but it would be bad to decline if you’re offered one
