protege earned a 5.0 WGPA Junior year and his SAT scores/Extra-curricular activities are above average. I'm pretty sure that protege is an overly qualified applicant, and posssibly even a regents scholarship candidate if he writes great personal statements explaining his freshman situation and writes about something he is earnestly passionate about.

protege, just keep up the good work and don't screw up your senior year. then i'm pretty sure that you'll be guaranteed admission to berkeley.

Thanks guys. 1) Glad to hear Berkeley likes IB candidates
2) I would be near top in my class, besides freshmen year =/.
3) My courseload is the hardest possible in my school
4) SAT's are near top I think, top 10% at least.
I'm a California resident.

I'm worried though. What exaactly is it? I'm hearing so many different sayings. 1) I'll get in for sure 2) No way 3) Maybe.

I doubt you'll be invited for regents, but otherwise, I think you have a great shot at getting in. Well rounded extracuriculars + decent SAT and gpa.

Keep up the grades and rock the personal statements. Best of luck =]

Haha i doubt i'll get invited to regents too. Do you all seriously think i have a good chance though? Because my First semester of Sophomore and ALL of freshmen was terrible. I know it. But I've been on a very steep upward trend. =/?

First, Berkeley is not a shoe-in for the majority of candidates.

Given your situation, when they evaluate your application, your chances significantly improve. Don't worry....just work hard now and see what happens.

I agree with eiffelguy87--no one is a shoe-in. If it was merely grades that "guaranteed" admissions protege would be knocked out of the running just because there are enough people to fill all the spots purely on perfect grades, without bothering to even look at "upward trend" or all of that--just straight As beginning to end. Fortunately, Berkeley does not. Of course, that does mean that some straight A students, or nearly straight A, (few, but I've met a few examples) are rejected from Berkeley.

Don't blow off those essays, protege.

Also, for Haas, I'll give you a paste from a post of mine in the business forum:

Haas admissions are extremely competitive.

If you are a continuing student, there are 260 allocated to admissions. I believe transfer students have 80 allocated seats.

In any case, the official statistics for continuing students is about a 50% admit rate, which sounds very good until you realize that that is pretty much 520 applicants--while there are thousands of prebusiness majors or people intending to apply to Haas when they enter Berkeley.

Haas admissions counselors are readily available and will discuss with you what coursework you need done, and what steps you should take for admissions. Your other counselors (though at times, the Haas counselors do this as well) will let you know whether or not you have a chance or not. Most students are strong advised not to apply to Haas, due to them having nearly no chance of getting admitted.
The median GPA of admitted students is 3.82, and generally must have strong essays demonstrating passion/leadership potential.

Transfer students have it even worse--8% admit rate (last year's, which I heard was on the high side), with the necessity of rather spectacular extracurricular work. That's a large part why the above poster's getting into Haas makes it such an accomplishment.

For one, you don't have to worry about applying until sophomore year.
Also, it isn't the end of the world if you don't get into Haas. Berkeley economics is one of the best economics departments in the world, if you want to use that route.

In any case, if you're interested in business, it isn't specifically necessary to have either a business administration or economics degree anyway.

Protege..Haas accepts 50% (yeah HALF) of applicants with only an average GPA of 3.6 or so.

Anyway, sounds harsh, but yeah..it's not that hard. I think people pump it up too much, but it's nothing like engineering and once you get in, the classes are jokes.

if those are your WEIGHTED GPA's.. then it doesnt look too good at all
but if they are UNWEIGHTED.. then i say you have a goood shot
your extracurriculars are great.. just make sure you convey your experiences well in your essays.. they read everything
