Am I a legacy at Georgetown?

Hello everyone,
I was just wondering I qualified as a legacy. I plan to apply to Georgetown University, Specifically, the School of Foreign Service. My father attended Georgetown University, but didn’t attend the School of Foreign Service, rather, the School of Nursing and Health Studies( I think that’s what it is called). Is my legacy status still considered on my application to the school of foreign service? Thanks!!!

Yes. If your dad attended Georgetown University, that’s considered legacy. The different schools don’t matter when it comes to legacy status because he’s still a Georgetown alumni. Good luck!

Yes, you’re legacy

Would it help my daughter at all that a cousin of hers graduated from Georgetown? She plans on applying ea.

@Winky1 ^^
Having a cousin who graduated will have no bearing on your app. Applying EA at G’town does not give much of a bump

Thanks, @wisteria100 , I was thinking as much!

Can someone also explain to me how the legacy works there, and wether or not it is considered in Georgetown’s EA process?

Legacy status refers to having a close relative who attended the university. The important thing to keep in mind here is that it is a spectrum - if you have a parent who attended Georgetown 30 years ago and hasn’t been heard from since, that will still afford you some extra consideration, but likely not as much as someone whose, say, grandmother is the chair of an alumni club somewhere or has otherwise been heavily engaged with the university.

As for legacy preference in EA… it is not completely absent, but someone admitted EA is someone who would be a shoo-in during RD. Given the limited number of admissions slots, particularly during EA, legacy preference could make a difference at the margins, but that’s about it.

So would it have more of an impact in the RD round then? (My father attended and has donated money, how much I am not sure though.)

Yes, as a rule, legacy preference (if any) would be a larger factor in Regular Decision than Early Action.
