15. Does Columbia give preference in the admission process to applicants whose parents attended Columbia?
We are always pleased to receive applications from students whose family members have graduated from Columbia. When an applicant is extremely competitive and compares favorably with other similarly talented candidates, being the daughter or son of a Columbia University graduate (from any Columbia school or college) may be a slight advantage in the admission process. This advantage may especially apply for “legacy” candidates. Please note: applicants are only considered to be a “legacy” of Columbia if they are the child of an undergraduate alumnus/a of Columbia College or of The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.

My dad got an MBA at Columbia, does that count? How much will it help me for undergraduate admissions?

Read the passage carefully. His having graduated from the business school will help, but not as much as it would have had he graduated from an undergraduate component of the university.

"applicants are only considered to be a “legacy” of Columbia if they are the child of an undergraduate alumnus/a of Columbia College or of The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science."
Columbia's Business school was not mentioned...so you're not a legacy. But you do get a slight advantage anyway.

When we went to an info session, the admissions guy leading it said basically the same thing--legacy is undergrad only, and parent only (we were interested because S's grandfather went there.) but they do seem to be signalling in that passage that mentioning the MBA can't hurt and may help a tad, like as a tie-breaker.

"When an applicant is extremely competitive and compares favorably with other similarly talented candidates, being the daughter or son of a Columbia University graduate (from any Columbia school or college) may be a slight advantage in the admission process."

They don't explicitly spell it out, but do emphasize undergraduate rather than graduate school. However, that line does seem to indicate that it should do something for you, even if you aren't considered a "legacy"

i had a similar question: my grandfather graduated from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1954......however, on the app it asks for "parents or siblings".....do grandparents count as parents? I'd like to put this someone on the application, I just don't know where

i'd say unless he's a development case, they don't care much. he's not any more likely to donate to columbia just because you may or may not go there.
