Rank: Top 10%

Other stats: [8th grade SAT: 720 Math, 600 Verbal; Soph: AP Calc 5; Jun.: AP Phys B 5 and AP Chem 5]

Subjective:

Essays: [Basically talked about how great I am for a while... took my hook (see below) and talked about how I can adapt to strange environments, motivate myself to work, learn from mistakes, other nice skills to have in college]

Teacher Recs: [I didn't see them, rather small school system, so one is from the head of the math department who's basically been supervising me since 6th grade, and the other is a computer/physics teacher I had all four years of high school]

Counselor Rec: [Probably solid, nothing outstanding]

Hook (if any): [took math class at high school as 8th grader, did Stanford EPGY distance learning past two years]

Location/Person:

State or Country: [Massachusetts]

School Type: [public]

Ethnicity: [Caucasian]

Gender: [male]

*Extracurriculars: [Math team, volunteering a little... this is definitely my weakness... how important is it at Duke?]

Other: [I'm not really an arrogant bastard as the title may lead you to believe... but hopefully it got more people to read! Any comments are appreciated... I have thick skin]

I would say you have just as good a shot as anybody... but far from being a shoe-in of course. They reject people with stats as good as yours all the time, but also accept them. Also I hear Pratt likes SAT scores a lot... so good luck!

You should definitely get in. Your ACT score is outstanding.

Your GPA will hurt you

A lock? There is no such thing as a lock for Duke

Plus, there are probably more kids from your school applying

Go for it...but I would say your extracurriculars are gonna kill u, cause when I look at that I don't really see anything (awards, NHS, music, etc)

keep in mind that there are plenty of other ppl with sat/satii scores comparable to yours, but who are ranked in 5% and higher. Also what do you mean by volunteering a little, like how many hrs?

I feel like my school isn't exactly as awards-oriented as others but...

8th grade: Placed with distinction and State Award in Johns Hopkins CTY Talent Search (720 Math, 600 Verbal)
Sophomore: Scholarship Award: "Outstanding academic achievement and leadership" in Mathematics (given by the math department).
Junior: National Merit Scholarship Program Letter of Commendation, Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, National Honor Society

how much do you do with NHS/other activities?

I am personally under the impression that awards don't matter, since I did lots of competitions but almost nvr won anything. Keep in mind that anything before 9th grade doesn't matter, even if it was something vary good. From what I see your recs and AP scores will definitely help you a lot, but it may just come down to how much extracurriculars you have.

sry typo... very*
