I am mostly Indian American, however my great-grandfather lived in Kenya and married a Kenyan woman, so my grandfather is half African, thus making me 12.5% African.
Is this enough to make me a URM?
Also when applying to schools should I select multiracial, just African, or African and Asian?
You’re not a URM. To be a URM you must have at least one parent who is 100% URM. You should select Asian. BTW if your grandfather is half african that means your father is one-fourth african, and you are then one-sixteenth African, so you would be actually only about 6% African. If people did that, then I could be an international student from Kazakhstan since my aunt is from there.
I hate these questions. If you don’t identify yourself as black or hispanic you’re not a URM. People who pull out a pedigree and try to weasel their way in are just pathetic. Put down Asian on the application since that’s what you are and what you are identified as.
Another way to think of it is the following: If someone wouldn’t see you on the street and say you’re black or latino, you’re not a URM. The only exception to that being albinos.
