I'm about to get my Associates degree from my current University in May. I applied to 4 CSU's and I've only heard from one (SDSU); and unfortunately that one was a denial. When I first started college in 2009, I made a 2.3 (4 courses for the semester). The next semester, I barely make a 2.0; I got a D in Psychology and two C's in my other classes (Retook it this semester and rec'd an A). So basically my cumulative GPA was a 2.1. After the spring semester, I moved to back to the US (military parents), and went to a CC by my current house. Again I made a 2.5 (three C's and 1 A), I was just getting settled into my new house and wasn't really focused on school again. Spring semester of 2011 came, I was struggling with 2 computer classes (got a D in one, and I withdrew the other one because I just wasn't getting it), a C in a Intro Computer Science class and a B in health, which made my GPA from that CC go down to a 2.00. I ended up changing my major because I realized that Computer Science was NOT the major for me, especially if I can't pass programming classes.

Finally during the Fall of 2011, I seemed to get my act together. I got a 4.0 in the fall and a 2.5 in the spring (only took two classes) at my CC. But while I was taking classes at my CC, I was also taking classes at my old University, so things would go by faster. Over all I ended up taking 18 units...GPA was still kind of low, but taking 18 units was VERY stressful for me, plus I was dealing with my parents divorce, taking care of my grandmother, etc; but somehow I stuck through it. Now in the 2012-2013 school year I'm making all A's and B's. A 3.0 for Fall, and as of right now a 4.0 for Spring. I'm trying my hardest not to mess it up again like I did last school year. So overall I have a 2.6-2.7 GPA including both colleges. IF I don't get into any colleges this year (and there's a BIG possibility that I won't because of the schools impacted majors and my low GPA), should I continue to stay at my university and apply next year? Or should I go to my CC take like 4 classes and try to apply as a CCC transfer student? Any advice would help. Thanks.

Have you talked to your CCC and university advisors? They are likely to have the best information about transferring, particularly within the CA system.

The UCs are more accommodating to CCC transfers, I’m not sure if the CSUs are too, you might want to ask on the UC Transfer subforum under this one. One hint though, don’t give your entire history with all of the details as it’s a little difficult to sort out, just give a synopsis: your current gpa, the colleges you’ve attended, number of units completed, major, etc.

I would talk to them but with my CCC its so hard to get in touch with them, and my university doesn’t really help me too much. It seems like they never understand what I’m trying to do/say. And thanks for the hint, I just wanted to fully explain my dilemma, I’m not too good at explaining things and tend to leave stuff out. Thanks for your help by the way! :)

You seem to have a lot on your plate right now.

I recommend you refocus on what you want to major in. In the meantime, go over the UC’s IGETCs and assist.org to complete your GEs. In addition, take a few courses in other subjects that may interest you or you find yourself excelling in while aiming for a strong GPA. Once you’ve decided on what major to pursue, put your efforts into it and follow the IGETC/UC/CSU/assist.org pre-req recommendations.

You will have lots of credits when it’s time to transfer, but it will not affect your transferability (as long as you’ve completed the pre-reqs and have a competitive GPA).

I know first hand, someone who went to CC for 7 years! Kept switching majors evey 1.5 years (finance, business, economics)!!! Was finally accepted to UCLA (their dream school) and, within 2 years, graduated with Departmental Honors in Sociology.

As of May 2013, all my GEs will be completed and I’ll have my associate’s degree. I’ve decided to major in Criminal Justice, and I’ll need to take a few pre-req classes for that major… I think. Wow 7 years at a CCC? How many credits did they have overall? lol

Do you plan on being a police officer or lawyer/paralegal? If so, I do not recommend a CJ degree. Instead focus on a pyschology or sociology degree. BUT, if CJ is what excites you, definitely pursue that route.

7 years of CCC and LOTS of credits, enough for a BA!! LOL… But they couldn’t figure out what they really wanted to study. They were just going through the motion of taking courses for the sake of obtaining a degree until they found a subject they really enjoyed studying.

The good thing is, whatever school I go to I’ll only be able to get a sociology degree for criminal justice. They don’t have criminal justice as an actual major.

I only went to CCC for three semesters because I found out that I had finished the majority of my GE at my current university, & CCC was taking too long for me to finish. My current university offers 8 week classes vs. the usual 16 week classes at my CCC.

So I found out that basically I can’t transfer anywhere because of the school that I go to. CSUs are catering so much to their locals that students who live in CA but aren’t in the local area can’t even get in, even if they have a degree and have no reason to return to a CCC. This totally sucks. So basically I got my degree for nothing? & I spent all this time trying to transfer for nothing too???

It’s not a problem that you’re from a community college or that you’re about to have an Associates degree. Your GPA is too low for these schools. SDSU is incredibly competitive nowadays (sadly to say) and as a San Diego resident, I know how many CC students are trying to get in there to stay local. My advice: graduate with an associates degree and start working OR retake your classes you have the lowest grades in and get an A or B in them. You can also look for universities to transfer to that have high acceptance rates like Evergreen State College. But if you want to attend a rigorous university, you need to try and adjust your GPA. I think you can do it good luck!

I already retook my D grade in Psychology and received an A. I’m not looking forward to taking Programming over, I’ll probably just ask for course forgiveness. I’ve heard of students getting into SDSU with my GPA 2.7, so I’m not sure how mine is too low? I know they consider locals before Anyone & they only had 7000 spots this year. I figured SDSU was going to be a long shot either way… Even if my GPA was higher. I’m not allowed to retake C grades unfortunately, but you would think that since I have an AA that I would at least be considered?? But all CSUs go this route. Why even tell out of area students to apply if they know that they’re not going to have enough “space” for them??

Also I’m a CA resident so the minimum GPA is 2.0 for me, personally I think they should raise the minimum GPA because a person with just a 2.0 won’t be able to get in anywhere. So right now I’m banking on CSUN to accept me because they have a high acceptance rate… But we’ll see. Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately your GPA is on the low side. The 2.0 GPA minimum is a blanket statement to cover all prospective applicants; the minimum is generally applied to athletes only. It would be difficult for schools to defend a policy that stated 2.0 for athletes and 3.0 for all-others.

Look at the UCs… they have a stated minimum, but it’s a consensus that if an applicant’s GPA is not 3.5+, the odds are stacked against him/her. But again, unless the applicant is a recruited athlete.

At this juncture, if you don’t receive good news from CSUN, review your application for areas to improve for the next round. Even though you have an AA, that does not necessarily mean you have completed the requisite courses for transfer to your CSU of choice.

But let’s hold off on that and hope for good news soon…

Hmmm… Ok thanks @SFSRules for clarifying that. Now I understand. I just wish someone would’ve told me this sooner… I wouldn’t have applied at all.

In the story I told above, they at attending CCC for 7 years, then transferred to UCLA with a GPA barely over 3.0

Another person I know of transferred to SDSU after 7 years of CCC… GPA around 2.8

As I suggested, if things don’t work out this time around, review your application for areas in which you can improve in… obviously the essays, if any, comes to mind since they are the variable factors.

Thank you for the support @SFS Rules. I’m feeling real stressed right now. With colleges rejecting me without looking at my application & my mom hounding me to join the military I need all the support I can get. I just found out that I can indeed retake classes that I got a “C”, which will definitely increase my GPA. I know for a fact I can get A’s and B’s… I’ve done it this school year, I can do it again.

Stay focused and you’ll find a way… and if you decide to join the military, I can answer questions about that too :)

I’m a veteran… accepted to USC, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, Sac State, and Univ of Washington as a Frosh… transferred from UCLA to Georgetown (accepted to UCB as transfer app too)… Georgetown School of Foreign Service class of '08.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about school or the military.

Thanks but I’ve been against Joining the military for a while. I’ve been around be military for way too long. Father is a Navy vet & mother was in the reserves in the 90s. Don’t wanna go that route again. It’s not for me.

I just paid the housing fee for CSUN… My mother told me to pay it, I was going to hold out till I heard something but there’s a possibility that there won’t be any bed space by then. Did I make the right choice??

I was getting the GI Bill from him in 2010-2011… He disappeared in 2011 (never came back home) & took it away. So since I can’t find him, I’m not sure what I can do now.

I think CSUN is waiting on my final transcripts. So no… I think I’ll be ok with them since I finish everything in a couple weeks, and then ill do a rush order to send my transcripts from Germany. Hopefully they say yes, heard it wasn’t hard to get in there.

It looks like CSUN may work out. In that case, I’d recommend putting a deposit on the housing to secure a spot; but check if it’s refundable. Anyways, you can always find an apartment later if there aren’t any vacancies in the dorms.

Sorry to hear about your father.

Is your mom a disabled vet (according to the Veterans Affairs assessment)? If so, look through the link below (if you aren’t aware of it). Try to get clarification if you mom’s service will qualify for educational benefits if the cost to attend college will be an issue. (Have/did you applied for FASA?)
