Am I aiming too high? Chances? I CHANCE BACK ! :)

I took the SAT's once so far and got a 2120; I'll be taking them again though, as well as the ACT's. I don't have my updated GPA right now because my math class is being made up (I’m guessing it will be in the low 3's). I am in the top 40% (with my wrong GPA-which is really weighing me down, this will raise when it is updated) of a nationally ranked public high school in Florida (700+ students per class) which sends many kids to top-tier schools. Only 3 of my classes are not advanced, and I will have 8 AP’s, although my grades are not stellar. I plan on taking subject tests (literature, math II, & U.S. history), to showcase my talents in these areas) I don’t really have super extracarriculars (model UN 9, debate 9/10, Jewish student union 11), but I have strong community service (5 hours weekly volunteering at a temple with kids, teaching them how to read Hebrew etc.) I'm white, don't qualify for need-based aid and I'll have good rec. letters and essays, if this helps.

Chance me for (did I put these in the right categories for me?/what should I eliminate?):
Reaches:
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Brandeis University
New York University
University of Rochester
Franklin and Marshall College
Skidmore College
Targets:
George Washington University
Tulane University
Boston University
University of Maryland - College Park
Ohio State University - Columbus
University of Connecticut
University of Florida
University of Pittsburgh
Northeastern University
Syracuse University
Definites:
University of Delaware
Indiana University - Bloomington
American University
Miami University - Oxford
University of Massachusetts - Amherst
Florida State University

Without seeing your GPA, I’d say that University of Michigan, Chapel Hill(unless you are instate), Northwestern, Boston, and NYU would all be definite reaches for you. Not impossible, might I add. What are your extracurriculars like? What state do you live in?(merely so I can determine your chances better ) It’s almost always harder for an out of state student to be accepted to a school than the in state student. To answer your question about AP World, I think that a D to a B is a slight positive thing because it shows that you worked really hard to get a better grade and had an ‘upward trend’. And taking ap psych. After regular psych should be fine. How were your ap test scores?

I live in Florida. I put my ec’s above ^ (they are pretty lame but I didn’t have time for personal reasons, I do have good volunteer work). I’ve only taken 1 AP test so far (I’m a jr) and I got a 2 lol :/. Did you mean northeastern, not northwestern? What schools do you think I should eliminate/deff get into? My weighted gpa will be substantially higher than my unweighted. Does my low rank set me back?

you are pretty accurate on everything. Except for maybe George Washington…that is a little harder than the rest of your targets I think, but even at that I still think you have a fantastic chance there. As for AP Psych, take it if you are truly interested in it…that is a tough course. Not sure how it would look after already taking Psych, my guess is that it that it wouldn’t look bad at all, it’s a tough course. Also, not sure how your school does transcripts, mine showed only a final grade, so I don’t know how you have two grades for a class…is it semester one and two?

I spent a lot of time digging into Rochester’s and Syracuse’s “ideal student”. To be honest, I think Rochester might be a reach. From what I’ve found out, UR is one of those schools that takes GPAs VERY seriously. If you create a golden essay, wonderful letters of recommendations, and have good ECs you still probably have a good chance though. Your SATs are very good and on par with what Rochester expects.
For the arts&sciences school at Syracuse, I’d say you’re pretty much set. They have lower standards than Rochester for sure.

Oh, and University of Pittsburgh would probably accept you, as well. Since I live in the area, about half of each graduating class from my school goes to Pitt. From the people I know, their stats are either similar or worse than yours. Good luck all in all!
