Am I Aiming too high

Hey guys, thanks for clicking the link, but I need your help with my college list. I have list in mind, but I'm starting to think I'm being a bit ambitious and I'm wondering if you could suggest any schools for me to add or look at.

Quick Stat Breakdown:
Sex: Male
GPA: 3.7
SAT: 2070( CR 710, M 690, W 670) retaking in Jan for 2200+
SAT II: Bio- M 650, Chem 690
Race: African-American
Applying for FA: Yes. I'm going to need a lot of money for me to attend school.
Intended Major: Biochemistry and French

NB.I'm taking a gap year so I hope that doesn't affect me too badly.

So here's the list I'm looking at now, I'll put it in order of preference:

Brown University
Princeton University

University of Chicago
Georgetown
Boston College
Emory
Franklin & Marshall
Rollins
Lafayette
Hunter College in the City University of New York

I'm thinking of adding: Tufts, Emory and Clark University (MA)

Thanks in advance for your help!

You can never aim too high. Just have something to fall back on!

Solid list i think. Jut add a great safety school.

meganturtle, hahahha that is true!

jetsfan, you really think its a solid, thanks man! and yea that’s what I gonna try and do. Do you have any suggestions?

Extra curriculars?

I don’t understand, are you applying for fall of 2013? Isn’t January too late to take the SAT again for most schools?

Thinking your list is on the reachy side…

Have you checked out [QuestBridge Home](http://questbridge.org/) ?

Sylvan8798, oh sorry I meant Sept and yea I’m applying to schools for fall 2013.

Scoutsmom, I heard about questbridge but I always thought it was for students who were still in high school :/

You’re not in high school anymore? o.O

^nope i just graduated. I’m taking this year off and hopefully will start school in fall 2013.

bump!! still looking for some help :/

Where do you live? Is one of these schools an absolute safety (you know you’ll get in and you can definitely pay)?

Are you applying to one of these early? Not a bad idea, but make sure you have the means to attend even if you don’t get the aid you need.

They’ll also be interested about what you’re doing this year, so make sure to write about that in your essays. Gap years can be a great asset if you take advantage of them.

I’d say the top 4 schools are a bit of a reach, but are reasonable. I’d add a school or two between the Lafayette/F&M level and Hunter…Muhlenberg might be one to consider because it is a good school, somewhat similar in size/feel to Lafayette/F&M (I am not familiar with Rollins so I can’t speak to that school) but a bit less selective and often offers good merit aid. And Tulane might fit a similar place relative to Emory (and Tulane has non-binding EA which is always nice).

bruno14, I’m from NY so I’m going to look at some state schools as safeties like Geneseo or Stonybrook.

Alright, so I’ve kinda done up a new list because I was a bit worried that my previous one was, well, too much on the reachy side, as Sylvan879 said. So here is the new list.

Brown University (Early Decision)
University of Chicago
Bates College
Boston College
St. Olaf College
College of the Holy Cross
Northeastern University
Lehigh University
Franklin & Marshall
Rollins College
Hunter College in the City University of New York

Howard University would give you a full ride I believe.
UAB also gives out good scholarships
(Not sure if those scholarships apply for gap students as well)

hmmm Howard. I never really thought about Howard because I wasn’t really looking at any HBCUs but hey if there’s a chance I can get a full scholarship I’d be a fool not to check it out.

[Grants, Scholarships & Fellowships - Howard University](http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/grants_scholarships.htm)

everything including 500$ for books

have you looked at vanderbilt or rice?
I like st olaf good choice, franklin and marshall too!
