i hate making another thread, but i need some advice. i'm starting to think i'm applying to too many schools. i've already applied to 16 (10 via common app). the thing is, i'm starting to regret not doing rice u, which i've loved since grade 10. i thought i had no chance, but if i'm wasting my time applying to yale, why not?

here are the schools i've applied to:
-mizzou (in-state)
-mo state
-u minn twin cities (really dumb, i know it's completely unaffordable, i wish i hadn't)
-tulane (EA, waiting for a response)
-SLU
-truman state

common app schools:
-american
-barnard
-bryn mawr
-college of the holy cross
-mount holyoke
-rhodes
-scripps
-smith
-wellesley
-yale (was gonna retake my low ACT for them since they accept the feb. date + any other if they do)

my stats are in another recent thread, so i'll be brief: urm, 30 act (34 E, 32 R, 26 M/S), great gpa, relatively low-income, v. mediocre ECs due to extenuating circumstances. i feel like none of these schools are even close to a sure thing and are all reaches. that's why i feel like i have to apply to so many...also, financial aid is a HUGE factor (it's why i didn't ED to barnard), so i have to have more than one or two options, you know? and all the schools with amazing financial aid are super selective. i wish i could magically get into yale; my mom wouldn't have to pay anything toward tuition since she makes less than 65k. unfortunately, it doesn't work that way...

i was thinking of trying to withdraw my american u app because unless i get a certain full-ride scholarship, there's no way i can attend because of its so-so financial aid, and i'm starting to think i'm really not competitive enough for it (i haven't done the scholarship's supplement questions yet). please don't be too harsh; no one in my family's ever done this before, and i have hardly any idea what i'm doing. should i apply to rice or u penn (2nd choice), too, or just stop now?

If you love Rice, why not? Can you not afford to pay any more app fees? Be aware that the deadline to submit in time to get an interview is next week, the 15th.

There’s no point in withdrawing an app if you aren’t bound by it, just see what comes in. You might be surprised.

You’re also a URM from a low-income background and I believe a first in family applicant too. You don’t compete on the same scale as the average applicant. Your 30 ACT is fine, outstanding even, and you really do have a shot at Yale and the other schools. Just be patient and see what happens.

As for too many schools, in your situation where you aren’t paying the application fee and you’re searching for the best financial aid package, there’s no such thing as too many applications, once they’re in. There’s only too many if they start crowding each other out so that you can’t get the ones you really want to send in submitted in time and of high quality. In your situation, I’d keep sending in every one I could up until the deadlines or you just get tired of sending them in. Just make sure you do everything you need to do, like the American scholarship application, and have a priority list, with deadlines, so you don’t miss out on any schools you really want to apply to, like Rice and UPenn.

Don’t be so down on yourself, only one has to say yes with the right FA package. That will happen, you just don’t know which one, and the wait is going to be excruciating. You’re actually in a much better situation than I see in other cases on CC, where the kids are completely unrealistic about their schools, their career path, or they are international and thinking someone is going to give them a full ride. Better to be grounded and on the humble side, which you are.

I believe she’s an auto-admit, or close to it, for all the Missouri state schools. Don’t know what sort of FA package she’ll get from them, but she should try and get to a 31 ACT to be eligible for the Bright Flight scholarships, which are small, but still add up over 4 years.

Yeah, I do love Rice. I guess I’ll do it. The only problem is my school is charging me a $25 late fee because it’s past Dec 2…ugh.

Thanks so much for the kind words and advice, MrMom. You’ve been a huge help on all of my threads!! Much appreciated.

Pretty sure my only real safety is community college. I got hardly anything from Mizzou, and I got 5k from MO State, which is cheaper overall, but that leaves ~11k. Even with whatever aid they give me on top of that, I still can’t do it. My mom has sooo many financial issues right now that thinking about college is hard and frustrating, as much as I want to go. Sometimes I don’t see how anything will work out. And I could’ve gotten more from Mizzou, but I have to have had ACT scores in before Dec 1, so that’s over.

I would’ve gotten an automatic 3k, but my ACT scores weren’t sent on time. I don’t know about financial aid, but I’m 99% sure I won’t be able to afford it with whatever they give me.

You have a shot at Rice, just try.
In Minnesota, you have UMN-Morris. Other schools where you’d be an appreciated applicant are Macalester and St Olaf. Both are very good schools that meet 100% need. And you would have all kinds of hooks - I doubt they get that many applications from gifted low income/first gen kids from Missouri.
In your situation, as MrMom said, I’d definitely apply to Rice.

and thank you, MYOS i was going to apply to macalester (already submitted part 1 on their site months ago) but took it off last minute. i guess i’ll add it again.
