Okay, its winter break. I want to apply to 5,yes5 summer programs.
1) Tasp -4 essays
2) MITES-4 essays
3) SAMS-2 essays
4) LEAD-2 essays
5) My states's governor's school - 2 essays
For a grand total of 14 essays!
Talk less of all the recomendations I'll have to get.
Is applying to all these summer programs maximizing my chance of getting- considering that I don't have enough time to spend on each essay
or hurting it?
I mean I love the premise of TASp, but i need time to refine my essays.I've already written one that I'll have to rewrite,I feel like SAMs will help me in places where I'm deficient.
MITES is prestigious. Lead sounds fascinating and my states' governor's school is a safety.BUt I feel a little overwhelmed and that tiny voice in my head is whispering "you are applying to too many!"
Pls. give opinions.
Alright,of to work on my other esssays.

That does seem like quite a bit. haha

But come college app time, you’ll have some nice developed essays to fall back on :]

Haha. Thanks for making me laugh out loud when I read your comment. I need some laughter here. I. am. So. tired.

I think that’s quite a bit too. I mean if you’re genuinely interested in all those and have the will to write quality essays and do all the work, go ahead.

Kinda doesn’t sound like you do, honestly, if you’re doubting yourself. But Idk lol.

I think you are right. I mean my favorite programs right now are TasP and SAMs. I love these. I would love to go to them.

I’m not as in love with MITES,LEAD and my states summer school especially because our governor’s school costs $2,000.

But, what if I don’t get into either TASp or SAMS. Where does that leave me? If I have these three programs, then I might get into another programs. I must stipulate that I don’t dislike any of these programs. Far from it, if I didn’t like them, I would never apply. It just seems that I like some more than others.

I wonder If I should take a risk that I won’t be accepted to any of these programs and just apply to the ones I really like namely, TASP and SAMS, with my states governors school. If i did that, then I could spend forever on my TASP essays and my SAMS transcript and my state school’s stuff. And I wouldn’t be stressing at two a.m. in the morning. But if I didn’t get into any of these programs, I would regret not applying to more. That’s my dillemma.

Eh, I understand, that’s your choice to make. It’s understandable that you’re looking for back-up, but maybe that’s a little too much? And additionally, I don’t know too much about those programs but most, if not all of them seem prestigious (and thus difficult to get into, exacerbating your worry). That may be the problem lol.

you are right. I don’t think there are any good programs that are not as selective and free though. i wish there was.
I just reexamined the LEAD program and realized that it costs $900 for three weeks. I refuse to shell out that much money, after all, my parents already have college to worry about.
It kind of awful that I feels this way. But I’m so happy to cross one off my list. I’m going to sleep.

Goodness. Unless there’s some overlap between the essays for each program, I’d recommend cutting out at least two (I see you’ve already cut out one). If you’re really interested in TASP and SAMS, for sure apply to those. Then, if you’re deadset on attending a program this summer, apply to Gov’s school as a backup. Though, honestly, if you’re not particularly enamored of Gov’s school, especially with the new price tag, I’d just apply to the two you’re interested in and get a summer job if you don’t get into either (or do research, get an internship, yaddayaddayadda).

Nice! I’m also applying to TASP.

I would definitely cut 1, probably LEAD, and make it round at 3 total. LEAD is not that prestigious (and pretty expensive). If you have decent PSAT scores, you could consider CTY as another back-up, though it’ll probably be fairly expensive.

Last summer, my DS applied to 5 summer programs and only got into 1 (luckily his favorite one) so i don’t think it is too many. With the economy etc, you just don’t know how many students some programs will eventually take. Good luck.

yeah this will definitely help with college essays! but don’t worry too much and worse case senario ,you dont get accepted, you can get a summer job or do a ton of community service, but you WILL get accepted. Also i know this doesnt help lol but there’s anotherprogram called YESS at Caltech and its for 3 weeks…just if you were interested. also, what are you planning on majoring in college?

Last year I applied to SEVEN summer programs. I ended up attending two programs, one of which was TASP, and declining quite a few because of scheduling conflicts. After all, summer is only 2.5 months long!

Don’t cut more programs:3 say so
Cut some:4 say so.

Sigh, I don’t know. I’lll write the essays. And then I 'll ditch the programs with my weakest essays.

nil. I agree with itsv, do not cut. Most of these programs are very competitive. Plus some of the essays may be interchangeable. I say go for it and see how it falls. Good Luck!

Just apply for all of them.

I have the same problem as you. I am applying to SSP, WTP, MITES, and this westpoint one week seminar.

I got into one already (the west point one) and will take that as a backup if nothing else goes right. But I am still going to try my best for the other three programs. The essays overlap so I only have to edit a bit or add a few words here and there. I am about half way done with them and it really wasn’t that bad.

So, my point is, just start writing them. They may seem scary and too much, but once you start writing it, it wil be much better.

Also, State Governor’s School really isn’t that bad. I went to mine last year and it was a lot more fun than I expected. The people are more prone to party and jokes. So, I recommend using Governor school as back-up.

Compared to many summer programs, $900 for 3 weeks isn’t that much.

But anyway, don’t apply to that many summer programs. After all, it’s just summer. Just focus on one or two that you love. It’s not that hard to get into most summer programs.

^For some people, it is a financial problem (or a guilty conscience) to shell out 900 bucks for just a single summer.

And the easy to get into summer programs have an even higher price tag.

yeah that’s true. I think I’m almost done with those expensive ones. I’m not that rich.
