Well I'm a second semester senior. If I get 2 C-'s this semester but still maintain higher than a 3.0 UW am I at risk of rescinition. Should I call up the University and tell them about my situation as well?

Thank you. Your good advice is appreciated.

oops i meant >3.0 UW
hmm i see where you’re worried. i honestly dont think its a problem but i’d definitely check with them. hopefully someone else on CC can help

Call them and let them know if there are any uncontrollable factors affecting your grades now, and be prepared to answer the question, “Why are you messing up?”

Messing up in senior year gives the worst impression to the admissions, because it negatively reflects on your work ethic and perserverance, which you must have demonstrated in your application file if you got in. This is pretty much like returning your food to the chef in a restaurant - it’s like a slap in the face to them.

I actually emailed the admissions office about this and they say C-'s are okay. However a C- can easily turn into a D+, and that’s when it’s NOT okay.

I am in a bad situation too! I have straight B’s right now and one of my grades just dropped to a C. That drops me to a 2.75 unweighted (3.25 weighted). However, first semester I had a 3.5 unweighted (4.0 weighted). I’m really worried!!! There is still a month of school and a test/project to improve my grade but it is still a possibility that it will stay a C and… there is no way of bringing any of my other B’s to an A. What do I do???

Contact Cal ASAP, just in case. I wouldn’t worry too much about it though because even if you can’t bring the grade up they may not care based upon your first semester grades. It also appears that you have a fair number of AP, which will definately help your case even though technically it is unweighted.

So I emailed them and this is what they said:
“If your spring GPA is below a 3.0, your admission is subject to
cancellation. I am concerned that your spring GPA is so much lower that
your fall GPA. Is there a reason for your dramatic drop in grades? Are
you taking all steps necessary to pull up your physics grade? You should
meet with your teachers, seek out extra credit assignments, and get
tutoring as needed. Do not let extracurricular activities get in the way
of your academics. Spending too much time with other activities is not
an acceptable reason for failure to meet your conditions of admission.”
='( I’m so scared!!!
I haven’t been doing any!!! activities let alone something that would get in the way of my studies! I have no excuse! Second semester just got drastically harder with less opportunities to improve my grades!!
What do I do???

The failure to have the voters of California enact the fiscal propositions will mean an additional $30M reduction in funding for UC Berkeley, according to statements from the Governor and the Cal Chancellor. In this environment, being extra tough on conditions, rescinding more people, will relief some pressure from the system by reducing enrollment just slightly. Don’t give them an excuse to rescind.

Do whatever it takes, including groveling if need be. If you had a solid reason for the decline, or a particularly tough challenge that you faced, then you could have groveled in the direction of Berkeley. However, in your situation, aim the groveling at your high school. Perhaps one of your teachers will make a judgement call and bump up your grade if they knew that the current status may cause you to be dropped by your college. They may agree to some extraordinary project for extra credit, or community service, or tutoring lower grade students. Take action.

Just like in college, attendance means nothing unless the teacher includes it in their grading. Cal could care less whether you actually go to class, as long as you make the grade.

To the person who emailed admissions about a D…who did you email and what is the email address you used?

I currently have 6 classes- all APs, A in 2, B in 3, and a D (currently a 66.4 %) in AP Economics. I am honestly just really struggling in that class, am legitimately working my ass off, going to tutoring sessions etc, but I can say for sure that i’ll have the oppurtunity to get it up to a C- in the next 3 weeks before school ends. We have 2 projects and some extra credit oppurtunity coming up wich will hopefully get me to a C but i cannot say for sure. The reason my grade got so low in the first place is that back in february I went out of town for a week to a medical conference with my dad and because of my school’s attendance policy on my record “vacation” absences appear as a excused but it is the teacher’s discretion wether they have to give credit for missed assignments. I had all my work done when I returned but my econ teacher refused to give me credit for the massive unit exam i missed and the accompanying work for those chapters that were due while i was gone. It is so incredibly frustrating because my teacher is so inflexible and the school won’t do anything because according to school policy it is the teachers discretion wether to give credit or not. So that is what made my grade so low in the first place and then I have just been have a really difficult time since then in actually understanding the stuff, and I bombed the final (but everyone did–the highest score was a 68%, I got a 65%–but the stupid teacher “doesn’t believe in curves”). Now that the final and the AP test is over there really isnt a lot i can do…its really frustrating.

anyways, that was my rant. anyones opinions or comments are welcome. if anyone has an email address i should write to or the number i should call let me know. thanks

Oh, yea i wasnt planning on sending that exact paragraph to them–obviously calling the teacher stupid certainly wouldnt make a good impression and that was really just me rambling.
i would write a much more concise email for sure.
thanks for your input!
