Am I calculating my UW GPA incorrectly?

So I decided to calculate my unweighted GPA recently, and I was pretty shocked.

Technically, my high school career will span 5 years because I went to an accelerated middle school where all of the classes in eighth grade were honors classes. They're on my transcript as well.
Now, I go to a high-ranking vocational school with several different types of classes.

With a total of 35 classes from 8th-11th grades, I've received 4 B-range grades while the rest were all A- or above.
After doing the math, my GPA came out to be a 4.0.
I'd love for this to be correct, but given the fact that I've had some B's, is it even correct? Am I supposed to factor in every class I've taken in high school, including gym, electives, and vocational classes?

You can’t have an unweighted GPA over 4.0! If you have 4 B’s, your UW GPA is probably around 3.88 or so. And yes, your GPA is cumulative, so it’ll be factored in.

Good luck!

@Coriander23‌ thanks for your response! just noticed an error in my original total - fixed it and got a 3.88. very much appreciated!!

Check with your college counselor…it’s unusual to have all of the grades from 8th grade included in the GPA reported to colleges.

@siliconvalleymom‌ hi! i’ve brought it up with my CC, and he says that because they were honors classes taught by licensed teachers, they’ll be included in the GPA and transcript sent to colleges.

Here is the breakdown for any who wonder. Figuring on a system with no - or + which would complicate the computation a little more.

31 x A (4.0 Each) = 124 quality points
4 x B (3.0 Each) = 12 quality points

Total 136 quality points / 35 credits = 3.8857
I would round to 3.89 GPA

@Singersdad‌ That’s much better than I expected, thank you!

In my school districts, there are high school level classes taught in 8th grade. The classes are listed on the high school transcript but not use in GPA calculation. Even if it does, the college may not take those into account in high school GPA calculation. Basically, those classes in middle school only advanced the placement in high school like summer course or testing out a certain class.
When the admission office recalculate your GPA, each college may use a different approach. I think most would not consider the middle school grades disregarding the level of the class. Some schools would not even count freshmen grades. Also, many scores only consider the 4 (or 5 including foreign language) core subjects.

It would be helpful for you to look at your school profile, which will explain how the reported GPA is calculated, which grades are weighted and by how much, and which classes are included in the GPA. The school profile will also indicate how your GPA compares to other students from your high school.

I’d look in your school’s handbook or course book for how they compute GPA. It seems odd that they would count 8th grade courses even if they you earned high school credit. Can’t you just ask for a copy of your transcript? That should have your GPA computed on it or if your school uses Naviance it should have your GPA there as well. Even if you school includes 8th grade classes in GPA, I doubt many colleges will include them. My daughter has several classes on her transcript that are not included in GPA pre-high school classes, on-line classes, credit by exam all have codes that exclude them form GPA calculation.
