Am I competing against Americans?

Hi, I am from Sweden and I just want to know if my score in CR and W from the SAT I is judged as if I have English as my first language? I have Swedish as my first language and therefore my English too weak to get good test results in mainly critical reading, but also writing. Do I need to find a tutor who can help me, or do they consider my lack of depth in the English language when I apply. I dream about going to an Ivy League school :)

You are competing against other international candidates.

If you have not yet done so, take the time to read through everything at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.state.gov/) Then make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to where you live. [EducationUSA - Find an Advising Center](http://www.educationusa.info/Sweden) These people are expert at helping students from your country find good place to study in the US. They will be able to tell you which colleges and universities have admitted students like you in the last few years.

Wishing you all the best.

Thanks alot for the information! Will surely help me alot :)

You might also want to contact your regional admissions advisor (of X college) for more information about admissions specific to your region. Check on each college’s website for related contact info.

You will be competing with internationals only! But the main problem in getting admission is your financial need(it is…for internationals)…it really matters how much can you pay…asking for financial aid makes the competition tougher and tougher. But if you are someone willing to pay, say, half tuition or maybe half the cost of attendance, you will be on the safe side.

You will not be competing against only American students per se, but your background in English will be considered when the admission office looks at your test scores. You may or may not be disadvantaged, but bear in mind that even international students score very well on the CR and Writing sections.

Thats really true. I have friends who have scored 700+ in CR…
And I come from the international community(along with my friends)…

I think I have a little advantage because I am from Sweden. Very many asians and british people are applying for college and most colleges want people from many different countries so they can look good. Sweden is a pretty small country and therefore the competition is not so high (except for the ib-students :frowning: ).

Most schools will consider your Swedish background to some extent, but just slightly. Don’t underestimate other swedes.
I’m Swedish and I know a few people with ok or good english scores. One friend got 700 on CR, another got 680. Both got more than 650 on writing. I myself got 680 CR (waiting for oct scores). I also heard about someone last year who got a 2180.
So, although being a Swede might give you
