So Syracuse is my absolute DREAM SCHOOL! Especially the Newhouse program. If I do anything in life, it's going to be journalism. But I feel as if maybe I am not going to get into Newhouse, because of it's utter prestige. Although, I have no problem transferring into Newhouse from another Syracuse school if I don't get in right away.
I'm a junior in High School right now, and I'm in English & US History II Honors. The rest are CP's, and I have straight A's (Aways Have had) Unfortunately, I'm in a basic Algebra II class (I'm not supposed to be but there was a scheduling conflict and no room in other classes) but I have an A+ in that without trying anyway.
I'm an editor of the school paper, involved in the literary magazine, various volunteer clubs, drama club. I'm also taking a newspaper writing class at a local college.
This past fall I entered to be admitted to Journalism workshop at the Newhouse School, and was accepted to I took a trip their for a few days and met alumni and admissions reps, and have in fact befriended them, so maybe that will tip the scales?
Anyway, next year as a senior I already have my schedule together:
-AP Language & Composition (english)
-AP Art History
-SUPA (Syracuse University Project Advanced) Sociology-- (it's a class at my school where if I do well I'll get 3 college credits, and the course strictly follows Syracuse U curriculum.)
-APES -- AP environmental Science
-The Gods of CNN -- it's a virtual high school class (online) about media
-Contemporary Issues (current events class pertaining to journalism)
.. I don't know if I should take a math next year? I've successfully completed 3 years though, of Algebra 1, Geometry, & Algebra 2..
HELP??
& Newhouse Chances PLEASE?

Ohhh By The Way, my GPA is about a 3.89 (I got a C in Sewing Class freshman year -__-)

OH SHOOT! I’m new at this site so my questions a bit odd.
And I forgot to add SAT’S! I’m taking them next week for the first time and expect to score at least a 1700. By June I’ll hopefully gone up to my goal score of 1900-2000.
AND I’m applying early decidion to syracuse.
IS NEWHOUSE IMPOSSIBLE?

oy vey…calm down…

1) ED to Newhouse…good shot with a 1900 SAT…especially if you don’t need FA

2) put 2nd choice school as arts and sci; make sure they know that you will do whatever it takes to get into SU and that you would transfer into Newhouse after you “kick butt” freshman year if you had to…

fwiw, I think you are panicking for nothing…a 3.89 GPA is very high, unless your school has ridiculous grade inflation…

and, yes, you should take the 4th year of math…most schools want you to get to, at least, pre-calc…and AP stats wouldn’t hurt either (since it’s a Newhouse requirement)…

btw, when you have time, could you PM me this Journalism workshop you attended?? my older d is at Newhouse, younger one would love this and we have never heard of it…was it something just from your HS? are you a local?

edit: just so you are aware, admissions are completely through SU, not Newhouse…they do not even see your app; it’s your state’s admissions rep that is cruicial…

Thanks so much!
The whole math thing is pretty scary since I’m no math wizz, like at all. I think I’ll end up taking pre-calc next year, but will I even do well since I’ve been in basic math classes?
And unfortunately, the workshop was a local thing done through New Jersey’s Bergen County newspaper, the Bergen Record.

Um, we live in NJ…I guess we’ll google the Record and Newhouse…thanks…if you come across it, let meknow…she’s a junior and would LOVE it!!

just found it on SU’s website////I’m sending you a PM…

I read on the website 4 years of math is recomended, not required. But if I do end up taking only 3 years of math, and a math elective, combined with the fact that math barely pertains to my field of study, and everything else i have to offer, will I be okay for Newhouse?

…?

You will get in if you get the 1700 becuase of your great Gpa.
