Am I Considered a Minority?

Hi everyone,
Quick question, I'm from Colombo, Sri Lanka. Now, in terms of college admissions, would I be considered an URM?

Thanks

If you live in sri lanka, no. you're an international student.

if you live in the US. Still no, you're asian.

Most schools exclude sub-continental Asians from normal Asians. It's on their application. So, you won't be considered an oriental Asian.

Tyler's answers to these types of questions are usually incomplete.

At top research universities, Asians are generally not considered minorities for purposes of granting preferential treatment. What are "top research universities?" Harvard, Yale, Princeton, [insert name here].

But, they are considered minorities at schools where their enrollment is fairly low (i.e. at or below 5%). And there are a BUNCH of schools with these numbers, many of which are good.

Sound stupid? It is. Who would have thought that Asians are minorities, except when they're not, and aren't, except when they are? But don't worry - you'll only be dealing with this inanity for one season of your life.

It might be worth speaking to specific adcoms. Sri Lanka is unique enough just to perhaps get second looks. With many LACs, Asians in general are under represented. If you search, you will likely find excellent schools that are actively searching for students such as you.

Also, if your family income is quite low, socio-economic diversity is a goal of many schools. If this applies to you, it may be an assist for you, too

Quick question, I'm from Colombo, Sri Lanka. Now, in terms of college admissions, would I be considered an URM?<<

It's actually a complicated question, considering Sri Lanka. Are you a Colombo-7, upper middle class Colombo-type? A refugee from Jaffna living in Colombo?

Where are you applying? It so depends on that! I know a student like the former with a $10K scholarship to Farleigh Dickinson, but I think you'd have to be the latter to be considered special at many other schools.

you're an international student, and South Asians generally aren't considered URMs. though i doubt whichever college you're applying to gets many applicants from sri lanka.

I guess I should clarify, I'm not an international student. I live in the US.

I never considered myself a URM, but I've received literature from top notch colleges such as Harvard and Princeton requesting me to apply due to my minority status.

I would contact the admissions offices of those schools sending you such material and ask them directly.

I have emailed the two schools I mentioned and they haven't replied with anything meaningful.

More non-sense on this tired and at times annoying topic. Read a bit of U.S. history before you ask the question.

then don't look at it if you're so annoyed, he's entitled to ask a question.

I don't have an answer btw except to talk to the admissions office.
