I graduated from high school a year early, because I took summer school (so I graduated this August). Now I'm on my gap year. I would have applied to university for Fall 2013, but by the time I found out I was graduating early, it was too late to apply. Currently I'm at community college, but only for one class because I signed up too late and didn't even get to take the placement tests for math and English. I want to go to a 4-year university next fall.
Since now is the time to apply for university, am I a transfer or freshman applicant? I'd like my credits to transfer, since they would help my major, but I don't even know if I'm considered a college student. I didn't take the placement tests or declare a major, so I'm basically just taking a class for "fun".
Could I apply as a freshman then, since I took only one class? I don't think I even meet the requirements for a transfer student...But I'm just so confused.

You need to check with the schools to which you are applying. Some will say you are a transfer student because you took a class (even just one). Others will not because you haven’t accumulated the number of hours they consider for transfers.

You graduated from HS and are now attending college, you’re a college student.

ED is correct, colleges vary in who they consider a transfer applicant, from 1 post-HS college course to a full year of post-HS college coursework; so you need to check each college website.

Would the universities I apply to know that I took a college class? Because I looked at their websites, and it seems like it would be really hard to transfer with only one class worth of credits. So I was wondering if I could just apply as a freshman as if I didn’t take any class at all?

Can you just withdraw. Everyone here says don’t take any college classes during gap year because you won’t be a freshman and it can affect your aid.

How about the two members above who told the OP that like most things in college admissions, there is no universal answer? The OP needs to go to the college websites and read transfer definitions. Would you like me to cite some examples?

How would colleges know you attended college after HS? Very easily:

[National Student Clearinghouse](http://www.studentclearinghouse.org/)

The school I want to go to is University of South Carolina. According to the website, I would be considered a transfer, but I wouldn’t meet the requirements for transferring because the business major requires some specific classes. So basically, I definitely won’t get in?
If I withdraw from my class now can I apply as a freshman? Will my name be taken away from that National Student Clearinghouse website? I’m freaking out, I thought I was doing the right thing by taking classes during my gap year…

Call the USC admissions office. Do not just rely on the web site. The web site is designed to answer the majority of questions, not necessarily the special ones like yours.

Erin’s Dad - do you know if you can apply to transfer to a certain school more than once? also, do you know anything about applying to transfer to a school as a freshman for the spring semester?

Check the web site of the school in which you’re interested and then call the admissions office. They can help you best.
