Am I considered a URM applicant?

Ok, so I am 1/8 Mexican and 7/8 Chinese.

My grandmother is 1/2 Mexican, because her mother(my great-grandmother) was full Mexican.

The rest of my family (all of my dad's side, ect) and everyone else is Chinese.
Because my mother's side is Hispanic, I have a Chinese Last name. So should I put that I am a Underrepresented Minority applicant?

Would it be weird if my last name is very Chinese? Would the adcom reps get suspicious? Is it possible for them to request verification?

oh and also, on the Princeton Application, am I required to state the exact percentages of my racial status? or can i just say "biracial Mexican/Chinese?"

thx

your majority blood is chinese, but i'd definitely just put bi-racial mexican/chinese...the percentages shouldnt matter much...

You're only a URM if you identify yourself as one; Princeton wants cultural diversity as much as racial diversity.

While you could count yourself Native American if you were 1/8 Native American, I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 1/4 Hispanic to count yourself as such. The National Hispanic Recognition Program requires that at least one of your grandparents be fully Hispanic for you to be considered for the award/program whatever it is, and since one of your grandparents was only HALF then it's not really fair for you to identify yourself as bi-racial. I think the bi-racial thing is more pertinent if you were directly 1/2 and 1/2 of something.

I know that's probably not want you want to hear because being Hispanic is an advantage, but coming from somebody who IS Mexican, I just don't think it's fair for you to count yourself as essentially 1/2 Hispanic by putting biracial Chinese/Mexican.

Here's a good question to ask yourself: would you consider joining a Hispanic association (or club or whatever) in college? If the answer is a resounding "no," (which I predict it is) then you should probably think twice about putting biracial on your app.

hmm lol this is funny.

what if someone were really 1/2 Mexican and 1/2 Chinese. would they cancel each other out? because asians are disadvantaged by their race? or would it still just give the advantage of being Hispanic?

actually guys, wouldn't they be able to check racial status with your Social Security Number?
