So to wrap things up. I’m considered half latino/half asian, and the Suriname part can be omitted?
I’m Hispanic, and the main thing is that most of south/Central America is Hispanic because of the spanish invaders spreading their race and heritage, but it seems that Suriname doesn’t have the spanish background. I’m of the belief that you don’t qualify. However, if you identify as Hispanic and carry that heritage as part of your identity, check the box. But I think Surinamese is interesting on its own
No. Whether you want to consider yourself latino is another question, but you’re 100% Asian. Latino is an ethnicity, not a race. One can be a white latino/a, black latino/a, asian latino/a, or any swirl of those three, and many are. Race and ethnicity are not the same.
Nope. If you were to push the envelope and play the AA game, you will have to pick Latino/Hispanic and … mark the country that yields the “latino” qualifier. Chances are that the school will not be impressed by your case. Further, you will have to state your race as Asian.
I recommended to attach a statement and state your ethnic origin honestly. Of course, you can always omit the entire question.
I think you’d score more “admissions” points if you were able to describe what it means to be a Latino/Asian in an essay. Obviously, this requires that some of your dad’s heritage is truly Latino in the first place.
I have a friend from Mexico, but the parents immigrated to Mexico from Japan. The friend is usually listed as hispanic since parents eventually immigrated to US from Mexico.
I have a friend who is Korean from Brazil. He married a Korean. All of his kids are Asian. They didn’t need the help nor play any game because they all got into top schools and graduated with very high GPA. Another story to complement post #24.
Depending on where you apply, Latino may help. It definitely can’t hurt. Schools want to able to say they have X% this and Y% that. If you are trying for a school that needs to fill the Latino bucket of kids, it may way in your favor. Check the box if you have any reason to do it.
HappyMom, you are correct, MOST schools if you count all 4000 whatever colleges do not care. The reality is MOST questions in this forum are by the people who aspire to attend if not the US News 50, then the 100, where race and ethnicity is a factor to varying degrees. If someone is not concerned about the 100, then it probably does not matter much if at all. However, most people that are not concerned about that tend not to post speculative questions on here. They do post on here and their imput is valuable but it is usually something much more specific based on an immediate need.
Ok, I am REALLY embarrassed. This was directed at another thread about why Colleges ask for Race and Ethnic information. Apologies to all concerned, it does not belong here. Clearly I need to post when I am more awake.
Yeah, but Portuguese is a Latin-based language. Dutch is Germanic-based.
I searched this out and suriname is in latin america so you are half latino but not hispanic because in suriname they don’t speak spanish
I know im late but i just wanted to say this
There is not an option to answer that you are “1/2 Hispanic”. There is a question that asks about race make up, and you can provide multiple answers or no answer at all. You don’t HAVE to say you are Asian or White or Green. You don’t have to state the percentage of any racial make up.
There is a separate question that asks if you are ethnically Hispanic. That’s it. You either are or aren’t. 5% is as good as 100%.
Both are self identifying.
These are questions for federal reports. Even schools that don’t consider racial or ethnic make up ask the questions as they are required for federal reports. California public schools cannot, by law, consider race or ethnicity, but they ask the questions for the federal reports. (and several california schools are in the top 100; isn’t considered at those schools).
Answer, don’t answer, it’s up to you.
This is an old post, but may help others.
Hispanic is not a race. It is an ethnicity. You can be any race and put down Hispanic. You can be Asian, White, Black, Indigenous, etc… You will get a boost in admission by identifying as Hispanic. You will be penalized by putting Asian. You could put Hispanic ethnicity and not put your race (Asian). Checking your race is not required. Your race/ethnicity is self identified. Only you can identify your race/ethnicity.
