Am I considered "non-local"? Help!!!

I’m just wondering if I’m considered a “non local” applicant for CSUN, CSULB, CSULA, SJSU & SDSU.
I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area.
it confused me because I read that as long as I’m a california resident I just need to score like 2900 to be eligible, but in CSUN it said that only their “local” applicants can score 2900 & I’m just really confused.
& if I am, does anyone know the score needed for non residents to be eligible? it says TBD online…

No, you are not local for any of the Cal States listed. Here is a list of the in-service areas by Cal state campuses.

It depends upon where you live. You have priority at you in-service Cal State and need a lower EI to gain admission. For other Cal states, you might have to meet a higher EI. For instance for SDSU you need around 4100+ /1000+ SAT/ACT EI for the majority of the majors to due impaction and competitiveness. For CSULB around 3900+ and for SJSU, they publish a list of EI thresholds for each major (only campus that does). EI thresholds may change dependent upon the Stats for each years applicant pool. If you post your CSU GPA and SAT/ACT scores and major, I could help you calculate your EI or you could use the following formulas:
SAT: (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math+CR) or ACT: (CSU GPA x200) + (ACT composite x10).

Here are the thresholds for SJSU last year. http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-10079.11705.html

this calculator said my csu gpa is a 3.0 & my PSAT was like a 1230. I know it’s probably not an accurate score since it’s just practice, but this is where I’m at right now, but im going to make my grades and scores go up. by the end of my junior year. I’d like to major in business and administration

Until you get a final SAT/ACT and GPA, there is no way to know what your EI will be. The higher the better. I know Chico states EI is around 3700 and Sonoma State is around 3300 for example. With your current GPA and approx. SAT score of 820, your EI is 3220.

You should have no problem in getting into CSULA and CSUN. SJSU’s EI last for Business Admistration was 3200, so you are in that range. SDSU and CSULB will be pretty much impossible. If you maintain your GPA at 3.0, you would need a close to perfect score on CR and Math to meet the index.

I would apply to your in-service local Cal State and one of the non-impacted Cal states (San Marcos, Channel Islands, Monterey etc…) as your safeties. LA/Northridge as matches, SJSU as a high match and the rest as reaches.
Take a SAT prep class or borrow a book to help you work on your SAT score. Work hard to get that GPA up a bit and you will have more options. Good Luck.

“San Francisco Bay Area” covers a number of counties. Your local service area CSUs according to http://www.calstate.edu/sas/onestopkiosk/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf are:

  • Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Maritime, Monterey Bay, and Stanislaus, which list "State of California" as their local service area.
  • San Jose, if your high school is in Santa Clara County.
  • San Francisco, if your high school is in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, or Santa Clara counties.
  • Sonoma, if your high school is in Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties.

It is not necessarily true that all local service area CSUs will admit at the 2900 EI. 2900 EI will gain admission if you apply for a non-impacted major at a non-impacted campus (or those campuses which say that they will admit you at 2900 EI due to you being in the local area). In general, the EI thresholds for impacted majors and campuses are determined after the admission cycle, based on the number and strength of applicants to each impacted major and campus.
