Am I Crazy To Change Schools?

Hi,

As the title says, am I crazy to change schools?

I attend the top performing school in the area (one of the five best in my country), have a small but close knit group of friends, a house nearby and I am lined up for some great opportunities- an overseas exchange this year, a school trip to China sometime in 2013/2014, several competitions, etc.

However, I have now been at my school for over a decade and I feel ready to move on. I haven't found a day school that I want to go to but I am seriously considering boarding. The only problem is the boarding schools in the area are poor quality compared to my current school, which is truly exceptional (results ten times the national average). Of course, boarding school doesn't have to be nearby, and there are a couple of good boarding school a short flight/one day drive from me or of course international boarding. So I have a question, do you think that I should stay at my school or start applying to boarding schools?

Parents of boarding school students, your opinions are especially welcome!

Thanks

P.S. sorry if this is the wrong forum, I'm new here.

There are some amazing schools where I live that cover pre-K through 12th (or 9th) with waiting lists and all sorts of letters required to get in and politics involved because they are so great. And they are! But at the same time, there are kids at those schools who are lifers, more than ready to move on to boarding or elsewhere because they want a more broadening experience than being with the same fifty kids they have known all of their lives. My child had four years at such a school and it was TRULY fantastic, but by graduation (despite many tears and fears), everyone was really excited to start a new chapter in their lives.

My advice to you is, it never hurts to look–and even if you go through the process and decide it isn’t what you really want, you still have your great school, and will come out of the fall semester with application writing, interviewing and test taking experience. It might make the college process easier down the road.

I agree-- it can’t hurt to look, but also consider that it may be more of a senioritis type deal.
My school is 6 years instead of four and I felt definitely “ready to move on” after 4 but I’m glad I didn’t switch. Instead I spent a semester abroad (which it sounds like you’re doing) and it rejuvenated me!

A semester abroad is definitely a good call, if it is available and affordable.
The question I didn’t ask was what year are you going into. I was assuming you were in 8th or 9th and had started in pre-K or nursery.
If you are just starting high school and feeling this way, definitely look around.

Hey, thanks for the replies. I’m fourteen now, and I’m in 9th grade (I think? I’m not American.) and my school year starts in late January and ends in December. My school runs from three/four years old to eighteen.
