Would i be mad to choose ucsb over berkeley? Ive pretty much narrowed it down to these two choices. i never aspired to go to berkeley until i found out i had gotten in. the ucsb campus is just so nice and right on the beach etc etc. im from SD area so being so close to the beach isnt something new, but its definitely how i like to live. I like to party, but not hard and definitely not all the time. Plus id be going to ucsb with some good friends. Im having trouble choosing, cause berkeley reputation just gnaws at me when i think about going to sb, but i cant get over the campus & weather of sb when i think about going to berkeley!

You wouldn’t be crazy, ive got friends that turn down berkeley for irvine for proximity.

It all comes down to what you feel comfortable with. I personally did not apply to Berkeley because i knew it wasn’t a fit for me.

Go with your gut.
UCB has a bit more academic prestige, but UCSB is a great school, too.

Don’t worry, you’re not crazy! You should choose the school that you can actually see yourself attending for the next couple years. Most people tend to go to Berkeley just for the name. I personally did not even bother applying to Berkeley because I can’t imagine myself going there, plus the town isn’t where I’d want to live for 4 years.

No of course not.
Like Clee I didn’t apply to Berkeley. In fact I only applied to one UC (UCSB) because I couldn’t see myself at any of the others.
Prestige shouldn’t matter when it comes to UC’s.

Personally, I had a lot of trouble deciding between Berkeley and UC San Diego. I liked both schools and both environments. Both had awesome clubs and students there, and I felt that I could fit into both schools quite easily, and both places had wonderful professors and faculty. However, I felt that UCSD would be better for me, personally, because I liked SD’s academic programs, school services, and campus better, although I would definitely enjoy Cal too.

However, keep in mind that prestige and high school friends shouldn’t determine which school you want to go to. Choose the school that you think will positively affect YOU the most.

In the end, it’s YOU that matters most - your skills, your life experience, what you’ve learned, the connections you’ve made, etc. Prestige, in the very end, won’t really matter that much. Think about which place where make you a more confident, prepared, and mature person at the very end. Berkeley and Santa Barbara are both very prestigious schools with relatively similar rankings, and both schools have their pro’s and con’s.

thanks. i chose ucsb because i felt i belonged there. i think i would toughen up a lot quicker at cal and sure, that may be a great thing when you graduate and enter the real world, but thats not who i am. Not right now, at least. cal would be a better grad school for me, which is what im thinking about.

Congrats! And welcome to UCSB :D

Good decision If you want to beef up your resume you should try to get into the Honors program depending on which college your major is in at UCSB.

Congrats on your decision!
Did you get Regents for UCSB? I was also considering UCSB since they offered me Regents :]

“Am I crazy?”

Yes.

But not for choosing UCSB over Berk Berk.

You would have been crazy to pick a school based upon the name/reputation! Congratulations on your decision.
