hi girls
well i live in nyc and i go to one of the top High schools here,
my average basically sucks: 85.7, so i guess my gpa is a 3
my SAT scores, well they’re also bad. 1930.
i’ve only taken one AP and i got a 4 on that (english).
now all of a sudden, i fall in love with barnard, and it’s making me feel crazy/stupid because i basically have no chance.
my school offers a LOT of AP courses but because my gpa isnt high enough, i wasn’t allowed to take any except one.
what should i do? is it crazy of me to hope for a shot at barnard?
if anything, i brought my average back up to a 91 second term jr year, but it wasn’t enough to boost my overall transcript.
i have a lot of ECs, but nothing impressive, like president of whatever. and everyone in my school is really smart too, this is really depressing me.

is it too late to apply ED?

Look at Simmons, a women’s college in Boston and other similar schools. It’s okay to apply to Barnard, but since it’s a reach I would try to fall in love with schools like Barnard (a tall order I know) but not as selective.

Look at Bryn Mawr, Mt. Holyoke, etc.

I think you have the best chance at Simmons which is in Boston.

Obviously your stats are not what you might hope for. But the only thing anyone can tell you for sure is that if you do not apply, you will not be admitted. What do you have to loose by giving it your best shot at this point?

And, for what it’s worth, I do not think that ED would be a real advantage for you.

haha I’m right there with you! I think my stats (well most of them anyway) are below Barnard’s standards (I would’ve tried SO much harder in high school if I wasn’t so young and stupid, if I knew it mattered, and IF I KNEW ABOUT BARNARD!!) I’m in love with it too. I guess all we can do is apply and hope we get in. but they are super selective, so I know its risky. Good luck, and know that wherever you end up you’ll be happy. Try to find other schools you’d like too.

I know I’m late on this, but work really hard on your essay/the Barnard-specific supplements, and arrange an interview! It’s worth it to try (oh, and 1930 is not a bad SAT score)! Also, if you haven’t taken the ACT already, you could try that.

You could go to a two-year college and later transfer if you’re so in love with Barnard. My #1 school was Wellesley, but like you I didn’t commit to my studies and my options upon graduation were slim. I actually went to Simmons (which I saw mentioned above), but regret it because, unless you’re a Nursing major, its resources are very small for other majors. If money is another issue, and you’re not willing to pay much if it’s not your top school, Simmons is quite pricey.

if I can’t go to nyc before jan 1 (the deadline), is there any other way to do an interview? I saw on the barnard admissions facebook a link to ‘interview with alumni in your area’ but when I clicked on it, it just took me to the admissions pg…
