I'm applying from California to several highly selective schools, including ivies. I've had all A's since senior year, but not this year. Here were my grades this year: Math (A), English (B), AP Euro (A), French 4 (B-), and AP Chemistry (B).

How much will these grades hurt my applications, and out of curiosity would it have made much difference to admit/rejection if I had had all A's? I would have thought that colleges just want to see whether im a good student or not and the last 3 years proves I am?

You are certainly not doomed, but your grades could have been an impressive addendum to your application (straight A's) but were instead kind of a whimpering "eh". I don't know if straight A's would put you into the admit pile...they are probably more important for a person like me whose academic record wasn't as perfect before.

I'd say, if you were likely to get in before, this didn't make much of a dent. But if you were on the bubble...everything counts, you know? No sense in going crazy now...not even a month from now, you'll know where you stand. It certainly won't be only these grades that kept you out, if that indeed is the decision. If your list is well-constructed, you should still have some good choices in April.

Well, there are no ivies in CA so I assume you mean Stanford or Pomona. Your Sr. year grades would hurt at those schools. But they're fine for UCs any of which would be doable if you have a decent (2150) SAT and these weren't your first APs.

I think you are fine, really. I'm sure the college admission officers understand that senior year tend to be a peice of work. If you had such good grades for the first three years, I really think you shouldn't worry.
