Am I dreaming here?

Ok, so Vassar is pretty much my dream school. And I originally wasn't even going to apply because I thought it was too much of a reach. But I've decided to go for it anyways. Can anyone tell me; am I dreaming here?

My GPA is a 3.71 weighted
I'm ranked 116 out of 505... (my school lets this be optional to include on my transcript, if that matters)
My SAT score was a 1730... low, I know. I'm re-taking Nov. 1st and am really hoping I can push this to the 1800s at the very least. Its really just the math thats getting me.

As for extracurriculars, I go to a half-day arts program called the Greater Hartford Academy where I take theater classes for 3 hours every day. I also do my high school drama club and am secretary on my synagogue youth group board.During the summer I worked as a camp counselor at an outdoor day camp for young children. I'm also a member of National Honors Society.

I have pretty strong recommendations. I also plan on submitting a yourspace... I'm going to compile a collection of poetry and photography into a mini booklet that I think I'll call Secrets Of A Restless Mind. I want it to show that I'm more than my scores and that I'm creative and can contribute to the community.

Oh, and I also have a pretty bangin admissions essay.

I want to be study English (creative writing) and Media Studies. I'm hoping a bad SAT math score wont totally kill me...

Hey huntingforhappiness, I'm also applying Vassar, and it's too, my dream school. I think ur activities and YourSpace idea is totally cool, and all the things you could do is to pull up ur SAT1 a little. I think a bad math part won't affect much if you like theater and drama stuff...I'm also in da school theater club, and I'd be glad if we talk about it. Good luck to both of us

i'm in a similar situation as you. i love vassar and want to major in english. i think i might apply ed round 2, even though my stats aren't fantastic. 3.6uw, 30 act, top 22% class rank, kind of small amount of ec's, and my recommendations and essay will be great..... anyways i hope we're both admitted :)

I'd say Vassar is a reach for you; however, I don't think it's a hopeless dream... you've definitely got a shot. Your GPA is actually average for the current freshman class (this was an A- or 3.7). In addition, your class rank isn't going to stop you... according to college board 26% of the freshman class ranked between the top 11% and the top 25% of their class (another five percent of the class was below this). Basically, your class rank is a bit low, but it's not going to stop you from getting in: there are plenty of students at Vassar who got in with a class rank at or below your own.

The one thing that is, admittedly, a bit concerning is your SAT score... as it currently stands it is rather low for Vassar. Increasing it into the 1800s would help a bit; however, it would really be better if you could achieve in the 1900s. That being said, bear in mind that the SATs aren't your only option... some students do happen to perform better on the ACT, so you could consider trying those instead. My boyfriend, for example, is a current Vassar student who got something in the 1800s on his SATs but a 32 on his ACT.

Lastly, your ECs sound very solid and your YourSpace supplement sounds really cool. It could certainly help your chances. That being said, I still feel that Vassar is going to be a reach for you unless you can really raise your standardized testing scores.

littleathiest, how much of a reach would you say it is for a male with a 3.6uw and 30 act who applies ed? thanks

Well, senor boombox, a GPA of 3.6 is not much lower than the incoming GPA of the average Vassar freshman from the class of 2012 (3.7). Similarly, an ACT score of 30 puts you just below the 50% quartile of accepted Vassar students according to college board.

The fact that you don't have very many ECs could hurt you, so be sure that your dedication to what you are involved in comes across on your application. In addition, your class rank is a little low... as with the OP its not going to stop you from getting in, but its not going to help your chances either. I would say your chances are somewhere between a semi-reach and a reach, depending a bit on what exactly your ECs look like.
