Am I eligible for a full need-based FA package ?

I am an international student,my household annual income is just about 13,000 $,so my parents can definitely not afford to pay for college tuition.I’m planning on applying ED to NYU but I’ve heard that they’re pretty stingy with their FA .Should I still apply since my financial situation is a bit extreme and i have higher chances of receiving a good amount of FA or should I look for a more “generous” college ?

Look for a more generous college.

Could you give me some options ?

What are your stats (GPA & SAT/ACT)?

Did you run your info on their calculator? Though, I agree with the above, highly unlikely NYU aid will work out.

You need to understand that colleges will give you need-based aid on what they think you need, not on what you will actually need. It is very common that many students are short by thousands of dollars ($10K to $30K).

As an international student, you cannot apply for federal funds through the FAFSA application. This includes loans, which are a big part of financial aid packages for US students.

Money is limited, and internationals typically pay full fees unless they are accepted to the tip-top schools, which are extremely competitive; so, you need to use the financial aid link on the left and see if you qualify for anything.

There won’t be much because there just isn’t enough aid at the schools, even less for international students. Most public schools (like the UC’s and UMich), will not fund anyone from OOS or international students because those schools are funded by the taxpayers of that state, for the children of those taxpayers.

UMich is a bad example you quoted. UMich does provide generous FA to OOS students from low income family. Check their NPC and sample aids. In addition, they do that by their multi billion dollars endowment, not with state fund. After all, Michigan state fund only covers ~5% of UMich’s annual budget. Nevertheless, international student is another category.

My bad, I had heard differently!

Here is what the NYU website says:
“International Students: NYU offers limited financial support in the form of institutional grants/scholarships to international freshmen admitted to our New York campus. Grants/scholarships will be based upon a combination of financial need and academic merit. Students who are not U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens and who wish to be considered for institutional financial aid when applying for admission to the NYU New York campus should complete ONLY the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE to be considered for institutional financial aid funds. International students cannot apply for financial support after they are admitted. Admission to NYU New York is need-aware for international applicants; New York University will consider a family’s financial need as reported on the PROFILE when evaluating the student’s application for admission.”

You would have to be a top international applicant to get much aid from NYU or most every other US college.

To get full funding for college here, you would need to get accepted to a college that guarantees to meet the full need for international students. NYU does not guarantee to meet full need…and the school usually doesn’t meet full need.

The colleges that guarantee to meet full need are amongst the most competitive for admissions her in the U.S. What are your SAT score, and your GPA?

Please remember that the admission rate for international students is usually lower than the overall admission rate…meaning the admission rate for schools that meet full need for all international students could be in the single digits.

And lastly…most of the schools that guarantee to meet full need for all are need aware for international students when it comes to admissions. This means that your ability to pay will be considered when you admission application is reviewed.

I dont think UMich gives aid to Int’ls. UCs don’t give aid to int’ls.

NYU doesnt’ give much aid to int’ls.

Have you looked into choices in your own country?

What are your GPA SAT ACT numbers?

Your screen name is odd - are you the mother of a student or the student?

Sorry for the confusion,it’s just that the abreviation of my name is spelled “mom”

Is work-study programs available for incoming international freshmen ?
I am ready to take out any necessary loans but i’m not well-informed on the matter.Could you give more insight on this ?

I don’t think you’d be eligible for any loans here in the US. Would you be able to get some from your country?

My SAT score is about 2000 but will most likely improve to a 2200 during the next month. We don’t have GPA,we are graded out of 20 but it’s not just a matter of scale: you can’t actually get a 20 (wich i believe is a 4.0) so the best scores are usually around 18 wich makes the conversion to GPA tricky.

I think I need to have my ISFAA (the equivalent to FAFSA for internationals) in order to run the calculator.

Yes, I have looked into univeristies in my own country and they don’t offer the possibility to double major or minor (plus the majors offered are very generic) and the flexibility that comes with the U.S colleges wich is what draw me to US colleges in the first place.

They don’t offer loans for this kind of things and my parents can’t take any more loans as well. They already have to pay back a lot of those.
