Am I eligible for a full need-based FA package ?

Just so you guys have an idea on why I chose to apply to the U.S,my counselor (and other counselors) all went to the U.S to study .They went to Vanderbilt(1950 on the SAT),Mount Holyoke and UChicago(2100-2190 on the SAT) and they all received more than 80 % and up to 100% on their FA.
So considering how broke I am,it kind of got me exicted to know that I can attend a word-class school despite my financial situation.

Your counselors and other adults in your home county attended college 8 years ago? 12 years ago? 20 years ago? when tuition was significantly less expensive than it is today.

Double majoring is not usually what it’s cracked up to be- kids make a much bigger deal out of it than employers or grad school admissions committees.

What is a generic major? What would you study if you stayed in your own country???

Don’t count on receiving enough aid to attend college in the U.S.

My counselors attended college 3 years ago or are still attending college.A lot of them are taking a gap year and will actually be going back to college in december.

If I stayed in my country,I think I’d be studying something Econ related or Biology.

Do you pay these counselors privately or do they work for your high school directly? Are they online counselors or local to your city?

These counselors are local to my city and I pay for their services .

What do your paid counselors tell you to do?

Can your family afford multiple paid counselors on $13,000 per year?

If you stayed in your country you’d study econ or bio- got it.

What would you study if you came to the US- and why a double major???

I still haven’t reviewed my updated college list with my counselor but we talked about NYU Abu Dhabi (wich grants way more FA to internationals but is more competitive than the NYC one) but i’m not intersted in that one. They actually advised me to apply ED somewhere else,I just wanted to see what kind of extra info I can get on CC.
As for affordability, you’re probably comparing their pay to what you would normally pay a private counselor in the US wich is very different. With that being said my family still struggles to pay for these expenses.

I would probably study Econ or computer sciences in the US,and I want to double major in two different fields wich i can’t do in my country ,I can only study one major plus even if had the option to study something else it would have to be closely related to my main major.I would love to be able to study something like psychology, sexual and gender studies, visual arts, communication as a second major.

It seems that you will need to apply to a school that meets need for international students or it won’t work out.

You asked about work study. Federal work study is what is usually included in a financial aid package and is only available, like federal loans, to US citizens or those who have green cards or other status which allows them to get federal aid. You most likely cannot qualify for work study positions. If you have the right kind of visa, you can work while in the US and there are other jobs on campus similar to work study position that don’t have the restrictions/qualifications work study positions have. The issue is what kind of visa will you be on?

You might try Skidmore. I just read that Skidmore gives the most aid (by percentage) to international students.

I was thinking Skidmore for a while ,I will probably end up applying ED to either Skidmore or Amherst.
I think i will receive an I-20 visa,by work-study I meant working on campus.

I have not heard any need based aid to international students at UMich, but I do know a few international students got merit scholarships (mostly in the music school). There was also an international student that worked as RA in the dorm to save money.

Your student visa will have some very significant restrictions on the number of hours you can work.

From the Skidmore website :

I hope the OP is paying attention to this:

The awards are very competitive and** do not cover the full cost of attending Skidmore

In other words: work study is not provided to international students. It is a US Federal program, funded by federal dollars for US citizens, green card holders/permanent residents. You will not be given Work-Study hours as a non-citizen.

Yes I took notice of that, thank you for pointing that out.

I understand better now.Thank you for your help.

With F-1 visa, you are eligible to work on campus though. But don’t count on it. You need to provide proof of full financial support before you can get your F-1 visa. Otherwise, you cannot even enter US as a student.
