My dad lives in VA but I go to school in the North where I live with my mom. If I applied (transfer) would I be considered as an in-state student? Or what about even for tuition?

If you live with your mom, and she claims you as a dependent on her federal/state taxes, then you are a resident of the same state as her. If you spent the majority of your time with your father, received most of your financial support from him, he claimed you as a dependent, and you had the necessary residency requirements met (VA license, vehicle registration/insurance, etc.) you might be considered a VA resident. However, doing these things may interfere with your residency/tuition status at your present school if it is public/state-run. It may also affect what financial aid you may be eligible for (e.g. listing your father’s financial information as your primary supporter as opposed to your mom).

If you are serious about going to UVA and applying as an instate student, take a year off and officially move. Or, just do really well at your current school and things may very well work out.

I have a lot of experience in this area since I was in a near perfectly similar situation. I ended up applying OOS and was accepted, and since I applied listing my mom as my primary supporter (which she had been – my dad was only willing to help as far as giving me an address to use to establish residency with) and she had a significantly lower income than my father, it meant a great deal more in financial aid. :)

Good luck!

Was that as a transfer or as a first-year student?

As a transfer
