If my dad immigrated to America at 17, but my mom was born here, does that make me first generation?

i’ve got a question about that too. I was born abroad but moved here when I was two. So, can I be both first-gen american and immigrant? or only one of them?

@bparker253 i’m not absolutely sure but since your mom would be american doesn’t that make you 2nd gen.

First gen for college admissions purposes refers to being the first generation in your family to attend college (anywhere), not first gen US immigrant or citizen.

^ Exactly. It is not regarding your family immigration history.

well actually, for the UC application, they have all these things to check off, and they separate first-gen immigrant from asian american immigrant from first-gen college student. I already know I’m first-gen college student, but given that I was born in India but moved here when I was very young…what does that make me for the first two options.

You can’t be immigrant and 1st gen American, you are an immigrant. First gen means born here.
