Am I first-generation?

If I am the first in my family to go to college in America would that make me first-generation? Or is a person considered first generation only if they are the first in their family to go to college?

Also, would it help me or not affect my chance of getting into a college at all if one of my parents only completed some high school while the other got a masters degree? My parents had an arranged marriage and are divorced. I have no contact with the one who completed some high school.

Unless neither of your parents have earned a degree, you are not first generation.

LOL one of your parents has a masters and youre seriously asking this question?

Yes, one of my parents has a masters but it was not from a school in America. I was not sure if first generation applied to colleges in the U.S. or around the world.

Doesn’t matter. If one has a degree - from anywhere - you’re not first gen.
