My father attended 1.5 years of college but did not receive a degree. My mother started taking courses at the local college two years ago, and is currently working towards her BA. Even though neither parent has a degree, they attended college at some point. Am I still a first-generation college student?

I don't think so.

No, they don't hold degrees. Technically, your father dropped out. But the main question is: did your father's parents go to college?

If they did, the no, you're not.

not to take away from want2bIvy's post, but would I be first gen. if my mother got an associates through the air force?

I'm pretty sure the colleges don't ask the applicant to determine if they are first generation or not. They simply have a question on the application that asks the applicant to say how much education their parent's have. Typically, the applicant checks a box for each parent that asks what level they have completed and says something like, "HS Degree, Some College, College Degree, Advanced Degree." Then they will decide if you get some kind of credit for being a first generation student. If no one in your family has ever attented college, you may want to write about that in your essay as it can be very inspirational to be the first person in your family to pursue a college degree.

Yea am I first generation? Because my mom got 2 degrees in physics and then 2 degrees in computer science, and then my dad got 3 degrees in math, and now he's a professor at a college. Also, I think my grandfather has a degree in English, and my other grandfather also got a law degree.

So yea, I was just wondering about this. Thanks.

Previous generations of my family, grandparents, etc...have not attended college

You mother has a degree. Ergo you are NOT first generation.
