I’m currently a junior in high school looking to be an engineering major in college. However, I have doubts that I won’t be able to handle the course work. I love math and science (mostly math though) and I love participating in engineering competitions such as Bridge Building, Hydrogen Fuel Cell and CAD competitions. I really like designing and building inventions on CAD. I don’t think I’ll have a problem getting into colleges because I have good grades and I’m a girl looking to be in engineering. I jut don’t want to end up spending 4 years of college completely stressed out and drowning in work. If anyone can share about their experiences as a engineering major in college, that would be greatly appreciated!
Engineering tends to have much lower GPAs and tends to always be an impacted major, but if you really like it that much it doesn’t matter. Even as an engineering major, I was able to pledge a fraternity and go out with my friends pretty often. The coursework is always manageable (3 techs/semester) and you graduate on time-- and for EECS at Berkeley, you can graduate in 3-3.5 years.
Don’t worry about the courseload; you’ll learn how to manage it.
Just don’t take 5 math/science/engineering courses at once like I did and you should be fine
The key with Engineering or really any STEM major is to pace it out. Balance the hard Eng/Science classes out with GenEds each semester so you aren’t overloaded.
Also the type of engineering makes a big difference. Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Aerospace, etc all favor different strengths and weaknesses.
