I recently found out I won’t be able to walk the stage due to excessive absences. I’ll still be getting my diploma though.
Will this cause me any trouble?
I’ll most likely finish this semester with a 4.2 GPA (but with one “C” bc senioritis). Is it possible for me to get my acceptance rescinded?
Very doubtful. I wouldn’t worry about it although I’m sure your mom is none too pleased.
she’s definitely had better days, that’s for sure
Any chance you could convince your school to let you walk in exchange for doing some community service, either at the school itself or elsewhere? Might make your mom happy. Curious, how many absences does it take to get your “walk across the stage” privileges revoked?
I’m meeting with the principal tomorrow, so I’ll see what I can do (getting off with community service is the dream right now). I had ~30 days of absences.
Yup. That’s a lot. I’m surprised you’ve been able to keep your grades up.
@amherstclassof2020 With that many absences you might want to check with your college counselor or your principal if the school plans to report it to Amherst.
@amherstclassof2020 Was your absence related to illness? or just part of the Senioritis you mentioned? Community service is a good suggestion. Could you volunteer your time at the school? writing center? peer advisor positions?
Unfortunately (as a parent) I had to do a bit of research on this for my S14 as his grades were looking tres ugly at the mid-point of his second semester senior year. He got his grades up enough so that we didn’t need to fully test what I’d learned, but here goes.
From a grade standpoint, it appears that at selective colleges like Amherst you’d need to get two C’s or one D to be at risk for having your acceptance rescinded. FWIW, my son got 1 C, and he heard nothing from Emory. So I think from a grade standpoint you’re good.
I never saw any data/info regarding absences. Our high school transcripts don’t list absences, but I’m guessing that some/many do. As @doschicos wrote, for your peace of mind you MAY want to check if it will be reported to Amherst. If absences are not listed on the transcript you might want to tread really lightly here, as to not do anything that might spur the school to write a letter and voluntarily report the absences to Amherst.
I would not pre-emptively contact Amherst about this. More risk than potential gain.
And finally, if you were my kid I’d beat you. Well, not really.
30 days of voluntary absence? I don’t think senioritis is the proper term. Truancy might be out of fashion. Perhaps they won’t rescind you on grades, but I would hope they would rescind you if they knew the truth about your truancy. With an acceptance rate in the teens, Amherst has many replacements in the wings.
